Focus question

I read this on another forum and did not see a meaningful answer. I know we haven't actually seen the K-01 yet, well most of us haven't, but in theory Pentax's K-mount lenses (with the possible exception of the new XS lens) are designed for PDAF. If the new mirrorless Pentax is CDAF, isn't it likely to be just as slow focusing legacy lenses as are the m43 cameras?

PDAF has historically been faster than CDAF. CDAF might close the gap with improved focus algorithms, faster processors, etc. We won't really know until reviewers get their hands on the new camera.

I would think it would be similar (maybe slightly faster) to the Q, they were not released that far apart and i would be really amazed if they made such a huge leap since then.

Wasn't there a recent report from Pentax users that CDAF in LiveView is more precise in Pentax DSLRs than the regular PDAF? And the Pentax PDAF is not record breaking to begin with.

The live view auto focus is more precise but slower, pdaf is less precise but much much faster.

Well, we now know it has AF in video. It seems to be tuned for video in particular. We'll have to wait for user comments to see how fast it is as a still camera.

My first reaction is that I will have a hard time focusing with a Takumar or another manual lens, unless I have a tripod. One hand holding and half-pushing the shooter, and the other one turning the focus ring, and the face about 12 inches from the screen to see the focus, the whole thing is going to shake, unless, a tripod. I think.

LOL... at what point do you have to drop the focus part from pdaf or is it phase detect almost focus?

It's a mind block. Try it and you may be surprised. I did and I was:

My K-5 is faster in CDAF in LV than in Phase AF in LV.
