The K-01 should be better with the new image processor, 1080p30,25,24 & 720p60 and h.264 vs M-JPEG.

I still have to find a fair comparison of MJPG vs. H.264/AVC encoding quality at different bitrates. Eventually, the K-5 uses 4x the bitrate with no motion compression. Are you sure the AVC comes out first considering the difference in bitrates? Source?

Of course, 1/4 bitrate is great for taking longer (read 25min) scenes.

My GH2 1080p24 17mbits/sec videos make my K-7 45mbits/sec M-JPEG videos look like standard definition. We will see how the K-01 videos really are before the end of this month.

you'll see quality differences if you do any greenscreen or cgi effects with your editing... the mjpg will stand up better to post processing better than the heavily compressed h264 formats.

From my analysis, I'd say the K-7 had a somewhat cooked way to render HD video. Way too aggressive subsampling where GH2 excels. No wonder the GH2 looks better. But it may be unrelated to the codec.

all previous pentax DSLRs are irrelevant for video, including K-5: no manual control in video mode is a full dealbreaker (again: you wouldn't buy a DSLR that had no A,S,M modes)

The new Canon 5D MKIII does 1080p30,25 24 & 720p60 h.264 just like the K-01.

I've shot pro work for magazines with a kr... full manual? easy..
I slap an M lens on it, set color balance and aperture manually, adjust exposure and hit the AE lock button... a little clunky, but workable....
now the k-01 I think will be awesomesauce for my video shooting recipies!

@D0n: ok, so it can be done, but I wouldn't call it easy by any means (I've shot that way with a canon T1i/500D, which had the same problem at the time, and even when I set the aperture manually, getting the camera to choose the right ISO and shutter speed was painful)

@jogiba: yes, on paper it's the same resolution and frame rates - and still, it may be completely different world - the C300 and the Alexa don't look very different on paper...

I'd love to see someone do a few whip pans with this camera.
The FOV on the K-01 is great and Vitaliy seems to have an interest in it doing well.
Should he hack it it could be a compelling competitor to the GH2.

In addition to still testing out my K-01; I've started out by doing fifteen minutes of video - although I've also left it unedited. It may be a while before I attempt to alter it in either the built in camera settings, the Pentax software, or even a full version of an Avid suite. Although I have noticed a few interesting things...

The in camera setting should be good enough for anyone outside of a true professional setting. But then again... If you really want to sink the money into any true video editing software then most photographers would leave the settings as is, and then edit it all later.

The only real issue that I've noticed an also be found on ANY still and/or video camera that is using the built in mic; the wind noise issue. Now all I have to do is to find two ideal mics to use when tethered to the camera.

Also of note for true professional video people... Don't their cameras have settings for mixing- whereas this camera does not?? The real professionals rarely use ANY sound that is built into any level of camera - they mix it all in later off of a completely seperate source.

* there are many kinds of professionals; some use in-camera sound (but yes, it would have to be XLR with manual gain control, and a better audio converter than what I would expect a camera like this one to have)
* I have some audio recommendations for filmmakers here: Foto and Video Equipment Recommendations: Video accessories

can you get the camera to deliver aliasing/moire in video mode? how bad is rolling shutter?

In that industry the only use for the on board mic is syncing up the video up with a separate proper audio track.
