The Sony NEX-5N with slow 16mm pancake is very small but with almost any other lens it's a joke.

Samyang is making NEX e-mount versions of their lenses, so you'd save that adapter length. The 35mm is a beast of a lens. There are many lenses more appropriately sized. I would like to see more pancakes from Sony though. The availability of good pancakes in several focal lengths is what makes me interested in the Samsung NX system.

It's the same lens formula, so I'd expect the e-mount lens to be longer -- enough so to make up for the adapter's length.

You would just be changing the registration distance. The Registration of the NEX is ~18mm and the Pentax is ~40 something, so you'd save over 2cm. That is still a monster lens. I doubt the NEX system will see too many 1.4 lenses.

I disagree. It's the same lens for multiple mount types. The distance between the rear lens element and the sensor needs to remain the same regardless of the camera it's mounted on, so something like an e-mount ought to have a longer lens tube -- the rear element more deeply recessed -- than the same lens on an SLR mount.

So an e-mount (or NX mount or m4/3 mount) lens will actually be a bit longer than its SLR equivalent.

Seeing the top view of the G1 X next to the top view of the K-01 does give a little hope that - with effort and engineering know how - a K-mount mirrorless could be implemented in a more compact package. I like the lens collar on the Canon - I presume it has a focus ring? Choosing to feature a very large example of a lens to prove a point isn't very fair. That lens on any body is huge.The 5N with the kit lens still lighter and overall much smaller than the K-01 with the 40 and certainly MUCH smaller than the K-01 with the 18-55 kit lens. Given also that there are several new E mount lenses coming from Sony this year as well as several third party makers have released and announced small lenses for this system, it is only a matter of time until the complain about lenses for the NEX is a distant memory, never mind that fact that you can stick any lens you can find on it thanks to the endless number of adapters on the market, including M42>E and PK>E.

I use my FA50/1.4 on my NEX with adapter and it is no longer than the kit lens. That lens on my K-7 is 3x the size and weight overall.
