EVF for K-01 - The EVF Solution that some want in a product that already exists?!

Sure it's super ugly... and sort of renders the K-01 a bulky and unforgiving mass of nowhere near subtle proportions... but it's a solution for all the naysayers (sp?)

Kinotehnik - Overview

That photo shows it as an lcd screen, but there is a little pop-over eye level viewfinder lens that makes it useful in the brighter shooting conditions. I guess they also make just the eye-level finder that pops over many lcd's - and has been a fairly popular product already. This one admittedly is a bit overkill for most. From the specs it lists that it works via an HDMI output from the camera - so there should be some utility for pentax to offer a similar modality for its own product should the need be sufficient.

Question is however - does the K-01 really need an eye-level EVF?

(and please take this as tongue in cheek - I agree this is a monstrosity

If you mount the K-01 on a tripod, you pretty much can use the LCD screen, possibly with a shade.
But lets say you want to maintain mobility, and even have a large tele-zoom mounted. In that case, i think a rifle
or gun stock would be a decent solution:

Just be careful where you point it, :-)

That is not a solution, that is a monstrosity.
A solution would be a built in finder.
A better solution (and I'm sure Pentax has something in the works) is a different camera completely, one that has been designed by people who know something about cameras, not furniture.

Agreed. Monstrous!
This is sort of more what I was getting at. A useful addition to the camera bag?

Something like this may also be useful and only costs about $5:

With NEX because the rear screen protudes slightly, you can easily clip this sort of thing on.
However the K-01 rear LCD seems very flush with the rear of the camera, so it may not be as easy to just clip on these sort of accessories.

The redrock EVF seems like a way better solution IMO...

But are you willing to pay almost as much for the finder as the body? Might make sense for somebody serious about shooting video but it seems excessive otherwise.

I do sort of like the folding shades that resemble the old medium format chimney finders.

Hopefully the HDMI port placement on the body isn't too unwieldy for those wanting to use an accessory EVF.

Pentax should have made the k-01 compatible with that

The fact that they haven't come up with a solution like that, and that they're not marketing the Q viewfinder alongside K-01 suggests that they are going to bring out another camera.

Hopefully, unless it just slipped their minds, its a shame really, they already had the technology, all they would have needed to do was redesign the housing to match the k-01 and added the necessary circuitry.

This - either as a K-01 accessory or built-in - brings the K-01 closer to the K-5 in features and specs and current street price, and exposes Pentax to the risk of product cannibalization (people buying the cheaper K-01 instead of the K-5). I bet that there were plenty of discussion within Pentax as to whether include EVF support in the K-01 and technical, photographic, and marketing considerations were debated.

My guess, like others here, is that the next iteration of the APS-C mirrorless product line will incorporate EVF either as an accessory or built in, but only after Pentax has released a K-5 successor that is farther away in features, capabilities, and street price.

Make sure it's Pentax cap! Maybe that's their secret plan - to increase sales of branded clothing!
