Focus peeking: we need that

Somebody was just showing me how they use their Sony NEX with m42 manual focus lenses and the Sony "focus peek" feature -- it's awesome, we need that. (Sharp focus areas light up.) Are there any new focus aids in the K-01?

It should be "peeking" not "peaking", right? I wanted to mention it earlier, but thought maybe it meant maximizing it...

Peeking -- yeah I would think so, although "focus peaking" sounds interesting too! But I suspect that Pentax's version is essentially a digital zoom like now? The NEX was really cool because you could see the whole image at once and see where the focus shifts as you turn the ring. Also you can tell depth of field changes by turning the aperture ring on a manual lens by which areas light up. So it goes beyond just "critical" focus because it makes it easy to manual focus on any subject quickly without squinting at the screen or zooming in on a small area...

I was a TV photojournalist for several years. In the camera bodies I used (Sony, Ikegami & Panasonic) there is a feature on the EVF called 'peaking" (yes the spelling is correct). It was adjustable from 'off' to 'max'. It sharpened up the overall image but also put a kind of halo effect around the area or items in focus. I found it to be indispensible.

That's gotta be a typo. They should fix that...

EDIT: Or not. But peeking makes sense either way, while peaking only makes sense in a technical way (I guess).

I think it should be "peaking", which kinda makes sense, as it's an aid that indicates where in the image that the focus has reached or is about to reach it's peak...
It's also a feature that's been in a number video cameras for a while now.

Just looked at the Sony page -- it is "peaking". Makes no sense to me, but whatever -- it's cool.

Well "Peeking" would make it sound infantile or not serious if you get what I mean:

From Miriam-Webster Online:
Definition of PEEK

intransitive verb
1 a : to look furtively
b
: to peer through a crack or hole or from a place of concealment —often used with in or out

2 : to take a brief look : glance

Examples of PEEK

  1. A little girl peeked around the corner of the chair at him.
  2. Close your eyes, and no peeking!
  3. She peeked ahead to the next chapter to see what happened next.
  4. He allowed some of his friends to peek at his next painting.

Origin of PEEK

Middle English pikenFirst Known Use: 14th century

Related to PEEK

Synonyms: browse, dip, glimpse, glint, glance, skim
Antonyms: gaze, stare

I don't see how Focus Peaking could make no sense after reading these definitions. Focus Peeking almost sounds like cheating so that doesn't really work for me. Does anyone really expect them to relabel the PLAY button as CHIMP?

I'm pretty sure it's called "peaking" because it highlights the contrast peaks.
