Pentax K-01 AF during video - rather interesting

Pentax K-01 Preview - photo.net

Some important details

Pentax has confirmed to me that the K-01 will offer autofocus during video recording. However, speaking of focusing, one thing that I am happy to report is that the K-01 uses the same focus-peaking manual focus assist as is found on the Ricoh GXR Leica M module. That system is one of the best I have seen for using manually lenses on digital bodies. I think we’ve all wondered when we might start to see some of the benefits of the Ricoh-Pentax merger, and I would say that this is one of them.

The red button and green buttons are both customizable, though the red defaults to “movie record” from the factory (and most of us will probably leave it that way).

That seems to give the impression of focus peaking during video, which would be new. On the GXR, focus peaking is not available during video, only before. It would be very useful for manually focussing during recording, especially with shallow depth of fields, but alas no. At least not yet.

Good news with an asterisk. Screwdrive lenses are noisy and will be heard by the on-board mic and most likely by a hotshoe mic as well. On my GH2, for example, the electric motor of my 20/1.7 lens can be heard. The Panasonic 14-140 is labeled an HD lens partially because the focus motor is silent.

For video with the K-01, SDM lenses may be the ticket. Or a screwdriven lens while recording audio separately (boom or lavalier). Or manual focus with peaking.

Lots of potential, but we shouldn't get overexcited just to be let down...
