Telecentric lenses for digital: helpful or not vs Retrofocal?

Over in the medium format forum, everyone's excited about the possibility of new telecentric lenses for the 645D. Supposedly, this helps performance on digital sensors. However, over here in the K-01 forum, everyone's excited about the possibility of non-retrofocal lenses.

Now, the thing is that's the exact opposite of a telecentric lens. Putting the rear element close to the sensor (non-retrofocal design) increases the angle of incidence, while low incidence angle supposedly makes telecentric designs better

I'm confused here. My sense is that "recomputing for digital" is marketing fodder, but I don't really know for sure one way or the other. Are we just being sold lenses, or do both systems really need different design criteria that much?

Well, for one it's quite certain that MF users don't care about size, weight and price (because of complexity and size of glass).

That's where non-retrofocal lenses have quite and edge - much simpler design means lighter, smaller. Simple light path reduces need for optical corrections, number and type of special glass elements, coating performance etc. The main trade-off is vignetting. Maybe it is more important on a larger sensor.
