If I got a K-01 I would get something like this:
Thank you for that feedback. I'll scratch the Flipbac off my list.

Does anyone actually know if the O-VF1 will be compatible with the K-01? As it does share the same hotshoe.

Yes, it will work since it is just a simple optical finder. Just as similar optical finders that slot into a standard hotshoe from Panasonic, Ricoh etc will probably work too.

The issue is the fixed field of view of the O-VF1 and other optical viewfinders: the O-VF1 is designed for the field of view of the 8.5mm prime lens that fits on the Q, which approx matches 50mm in old-speak or about a 35mm lens in K-01 terms.

As this field of view is fixed at approx 35mm, if you mount a longer or shorter prime than 35mm, or a zoom, and use the O-VF1 to try and frame the shot, the experience may not be great.

I wonder if they can use the hotshoe for an optical viewfinder that zooms.
The camera is able to give the information about the focal length through the hotshoe, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Having it done automatically by the camera to match the focal length you are shooting at would require some data interface between the camera and the external OVF.

Maybe the data normally available to a flash via the P-TTL protocols passed through the hot shoe contacts could assist an external optical viewfinder to learn the active focal length of the camera - since I think the active focal length is relayed to a flash via P-TTL. (Or maybe that data isn't in P-TTL - I'm not sure).

Then once the external optical viewfinder knew about the focal length, it would need a little motor to zoom in or out to adjust the viewfinder optics.

This all seems a lot of engineering.

Probably a simpler and more flexible solution would be an electronic viewfinder - like Ricoh's VF-2 electronic viewfinder, adapted for use by the K-01.

There is a digital contact and that is used to transmit the info needed for (p) ttl and it contains the focal length as well, that's why a flash with auto zoom works with.
So the protecal and the data are already in the camera and shouldn't even require an update.
best thing is this should also work with the Q.

EVF would indeed be better but Pentax didn't provide the contacts for it.

Aha. I thought about it in only in terms of the flash metering, but obviously the auto-zoom mechanisms must read focal length too. I guess auto-zoom flashes provide some precedent for the sort of hardware you'd need to drive a variable field of view OVF. And even some cheap flashes have auto-zoom, so the tech probably needn't necessarily be expensive.

The probably is a way to adapt compact external EVF's like the Ricoh VF-2 to the HDMI out of the K-01 (and other cameras). Some hobbyist has probably already done that, I bet.

Does anyone know at the moment what specific lens, that will mount on the K-01, will work with the O-VF1?

It's a bit odd, though I get a feeling K-01 is aimed at becoming "premium hipfactor videocam"...

It's a bit odd for you to think they could add an EVF to the K-01. How do a billion people take photos everyday without a viewfinder, that is very odd.

I quoted:

"Pentax told us that there were no plans of making an EVF for the K-01."

Which I stated that I find a bit odd.... (considering how a billion people take photos everyday, with a viewfinder).
