Sure, I'd also try the 40XS on film camera over the weekend and see how it works

Splendid! Personally how well MF lenses work with the K-01 is the biggest question for me.
+1

Does focus peaking work well for MF?

The 40XS only covers the APS-C sensor and will vignette in a 35mm SLR.

it's not 100% APS-C lens. DA40/2.8 has some vignetting at f/2.8, but at f4 is "full-grown" lens at FF.

it's Canon 24/1.4L on FF.

I can say that DA40/2.8 is better at film camera.

Yeah, I know. Pentax said so for all their DA lenses (including DA*200 and DA*300), but some DA lenses can be used on film cameras just fine

I tried my 10-24mm Tamron on my PZ-1P SLR and it does not vignette from 13-24mm.

I'll have the camera on Thursday (for sure)...so there review will be posted on Sunday morning Doesn't give me much time to do all the testing, but it'll happen, as will a "in practice" shootout against the K-5.

This is off the record, but while I think that the the K-01 will make a great point-and-shoot and a great video camera, it won't replace the K-5/3 in the bag.

Off the record, posted on the forum? Me thinks not.

I think the K-01 with a Zacuto Z-Finder may well replace the K-5 for shooting MF lens. At least I hope so.

Regardless, looking forward to the review.

The JPEG IQ should be better than that of the K-5, for one (obviously), and RAW IQ should be identical, but most won't care

K-01's Dynamic Range

QuoteOriginally posted by Adam Quote

Adam, I wrote this comment shortly before you posted your comment regarding RAW IQ:

I'm sure the K-01's dynamic range is already high on your list of features to investigate without anyone having to suggest it; however, aside from focus peaking and color depth, that is what interests me most with regard to the K-01 (I'm almost willing to overlook the K-01's toy-like design and relatively high price for the sake of having focus peaking).

I know the K-01 has the same sensor as the K-5, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will have precisely the same dynamic range. I say this (in part) because, as you know, the same sensor is also used in several cameras from competing manufacturers, yet none of them have the almost supernatural dynamic range of the K-5 (or so my research tells me; please correct me if I am wrong). Since the K-01 is supposedly a "budget" [sic] camera, its dynamic range may not fully match that of the K-5. If it is extremely close, that will be good enough for me, thanks to the added benefit of focus peaking.

P.S. Would it be realistic / sensible / practical / useful / educational for you to post some sample RAW files from your K-01 for PentaxForum members to download and manipulate to their hearts' content? I don't know if PentaxForums.com is capable of allowing such downloads, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Thank you.

RAW files will be made available, as we've done in the past for all our premium in-depth reviews.

I don't think the K-01's purpose is to replace a K-5, but to attract a different kind of crowd that currently buys Pentax (which is good, Pentax needs to atract a greater public) and as backup/walk around camera for K-5. I hope it's reviews show that in can fulfill it's promise. I hope it succeeds and further people interest in the Pentax brand and on the K mount. Success means new and better cameras and more lenses
