Question: Which SD Card for casual video?

Gentlemen and Ladies: Having no prior experience with digital video (my vidcam is digital tape), will you kindly recommend a SD card that is a good compromise between cost and spec.s for enthusiast amateur needs? My K-01 is inbound and it just occured to me the cards that work well for stills might not serve for video:
  1. I don't need broadcast quality
  2. I can't imagine more than a few minutes continuous shooting
  3. I have very little video PP experience and nothing but default video editing software
  4. I want the best final quality I am capable of producing without buying more card speed than I need (no need to be a fake stud), but I WILL practice and strive to improve over time
By reading I've guessed i should have SDHC, no less than 8Gb; 10Mbs minimum read/write speed; Class 6. Do I need UHS-1, SDXC or Class 10? Do I need even the prior standards? Is a bunch of fast 4Gb cards better than 1 32Gb?
I imagine I don't need Sandisk SDXC Professional, 64Mb, etc.

IOW, do I really NEED to buy a $125 card just to shoot personal events for my own use and blog posting?

Thank you in advance for your recommendations!!

Ask Franc how big the files are. My guess is that any class 6 card will do, but buy a good one.

Hah Hah - thanks! I saw that earlier today and I have it in a Pending Cart. Clearly I don't need as much "card" as I thought. That card is supposed to be good for 4 hours of 1080p. I could put the camera on a tripod and record an entire holiday. Heh - did that many times on S-VHS and Mini Digital tape.

Even Amazon Basics Class 10 SD cards will do. They're cheap, reliable (so far), and they deliver same speed as the popular Transcend Class 10 cards.

I have Extreme Pro SDHC 45mb/sec cards and 30mb/sec Extreme Sandisk cards but I just got a 16GB Transcend Class 10 SDHC card for $15.98 a few week ago from Amazon . The price is up to $16.99 now.

I thought the class indicated the read write speed
class 2 == 2MB
all the in between
class10 == 10MB

Did I miss something?

Well I was asking the question because I don't really know the video spec's either
The card the recommended is Class 10 but has 30Mb/s R/W speed

This one writes 1280/720/30fps at 30mps. I think that is lower than the K-01 HD output - which is why I asked the question. OTOH the card that seems to handle 1080p costs $125. But I'm confused, too.

I use a 32GB Sandisk Ultra Class 4 15mb/sec SDHC card in my Panasonic TM700 3MOS camcorder in 1080p60 28mbits/sec mode without problems so for video it should also work with the K-01 in 1080p30 24mbits/sec mode.

In order to achieve a certain class ranking, an SD card must meed the minimum write speed established by SDA for that class.

In other words, although the 32GB SanDisk Ultra is a Class 4 SDHC card, it can qualify as a Class 10 SDHC. SanDisk does this is because there were only four classes at the time: 2, 4, 6, and 10. Having classifications is a good way for non-technical customers to have some grasp of the performance of the card and differentiate between the performance tiers. It would be confusing if all of SanDisk's cards were class 6 and 10 even if they kept the "ultra" and "extreme" titles.

SanDisk and a few other brands over-qualify their cards because Class 2 and 4 cards are already extremely cheap, but the lack of higher classifications requires them to divide their cards up among under-representative classes.

Well, that was the case until UHS (Ultra High Speed) cards were developed, but they also have a different and faster transfer protocol similar to the upgrade between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

There aren't many other SD brands that do this

I use a 8GB Ultra and it can't write fast enough in my K-5 for video. I get about 10 secs of video before it stops.

K-01 used a more compressed format so not comparable.

Size of 16 or 8 gb should be enough so just get the basic 30MB/s or 45MB/s cards from Sandisk, those are certainly fast enough and not that expensive.
It's better to pay $10 more to get some good cards then buy twice.

The K-5 uses M-JPEG that has a bit rate of over 80mbits/sec so you need a 30mb/sec card like my Sandisk Extreme . I don't know of any current DSLR that uses M-JPEG since most of them use H.264 with data rates of 24mbits/sec.
