Thanks! 2 things regarding your photo.. first I like the framing and how you incorporated that checkerboard pattern, second i like the type of tones brought out in your processing.

Thank you as well. I used a da100mm macro wr on that outing with a combination of peaking and assist depending on the situation... but quick shift is definitely the most valuable asset since AF at best can usually only get me close to what i want and sometimes its even too slow or inaccurate for that. Also leaving the lens focused and just moving forward or backward works well for some situations too.

Yeah, I knew you weren't relying on AF for those shots. They're just so perfect that I didn't know if you found peaking to be that accurate or if you were using some other method. And I agree about slight physical movements instead of focus adjustments sometimes. Just seems easier!

Well that's the thing... depending on what you're doing at the time various methods can be useful. Actually in general I have found focus peaking to work very well and I pretty much leave it on most of the time, if I don't need it i can ignore it. For example with really close up situations like the dragonfly or B&W flower I find it faster to just move the camera... but with the other flower photos where I am not that close since I had something different in mind for those peaking and assist are great. The bees down here in FL are frenetic and never seem to sit still because even in the morning its hot and consequently they have plenty of energy so I have yet to acquire the patience to get as close as doundounba and many others here who take amazing macros. I've recently been checking out many of the macro forums here and there are some outstanding examples of what can be done especially with proper lighting rigs and such. As for me at the moment I like utilizing available light but perhaps a little later I may start to incorporate a flash rig.
