K-01 with DA15,21, 40 and 70 mounted

Not at the same time! I took 50+ shots of the K-01 with the DA15, DA21, DA40 (both flavors), DA70 and SMC-M 50mm mounted. I also compared it side by side with the Olympus E-P1 Pen. Since I took so many shots, I'll just post a few here. You can go see the entire set on Flickr (and see them in full size).

Pentax K-01 with DA15, DA21, DA40 and DA70

DA70mm f/2.4 Limited

DA40mm f/2.8 Limited

DA40mm f/2.8 XS

DA21mm f/3.2 Limited (I think this is my favorite look.)

DA15mm f/4.0 Limited

K-01 with DA40XS beside the Olympus Pen E-P1 with M.Zuiko 17mm f/2.8 (their pancake)

K-01 with the Pentax SMC-M 50mm f/1.7 attached next to the Pen with the required adapter

I took many more photos including several angles of each lens, with and without caps and hoods, or hood extended or retracted. Too many to post here, so go look at them at my Flickr set.

I just wanted to say thanks for this. I really was wondering how it looked with a 21mm. Could you pretty please tell us how AF/MF works with the lens in the K-01? Just hands on opinion would be so awesome. Thanks for the samples!

just nit picking, but they look slightly overexposed. the highlights on the white parts of the K-01 are blown. you should have put some negative exposure compensation on and corrected it in PP to maintain the detail in the highlights.

The DA70 is the only one that's hunted, but even then not that much. They all work very nicely.

Plus, look at my Flickr stream before the camera porn shots. I shot some bluebonnets with the various lenses, but I haven't posted them here.

Thanks for sharing the images, Russ. I always pick black to be a bit more stealthy, but man that b&w looks pretty great!

Russ: These are really quite nice images - 3D pop and very vibrant colors. I'm especially pleased that the XS produces. I would expect that from the 21Ltd.

My image count is 6 so far and I'm at work, so nothing until tonight. My first "wish I had one" is a small Limited Power Zoom. The DA55~300 is a beast to hold steady with the K-01. Just in Playback mode I can see camera shake blur at edges. CDAF at 260mm worked quickly and well, including focus peaking, if I pre-focused manually. Otherwise the camera wanted to move the lens all the way through its range (I know - not intended for 300mm, but hey, I had to try).

For right now I'm just reading the manual and learning the camera. I suppose I'l do some camera porn shots with K lenses mounted.

Thank you. Looks like the K-01 and the Limited primes were made for each other.

Does the CDAF move slower as your zoom range on the same lens increases? For example, if it takes 1s to cycle from near to infinity at 55mm, does it cycle as fast at 300mm, or is it a good bit slower?

Focus peaking - can you enable focus peaking while in AF mode, and use that with quick shift? I assume you were referring to the quick shift by pre-focus manually?

Rather than leave you hanging I'll answer - I don't know yet. I'm at work and get a 15 minute break every now and then. Haven't had enough time to experiment with the 55~300 to answer these questions, nor even to set up situations and try things out.

Settings on the camera: Live View Grid and Histogram; AE Metering Multi-Segment; AF Select 16/100 (size of box) center; AF AutoZoom Disabled; Focus Peaking Enabled; AEL/AF back button Enabled AF (strangely the Half-Press AF is not disabled. There must be a buried setting in there I didn't get). Most other auto image functions disabled.

Focus Peaking DOES outline the in-focus elements on the LCD when AF is enabled; you CAN touch-up focus as necessary using QuickShift.

Here's what I can tell you so far. I focused on a subject at 150 or so mm and focus locked very quickly - less than 1/2 second in 2 steps. Moved to a subject at (from Playback INFO) 260mm and didn't touch focus ring. The AF moved the focus 100% to the limit then all the way back to focus (DK whether near then far of the reverse, but I suspect near then far). The action lasted more than two seconds. Once the CDAF completed its survey of the focus real estate it locked in one attempt. Focus Locked with authority - there was no hunting. Images were 1/400 f/6.3 ISO200. Shot from an area of building shade, into shade with ample ambient sunlight. No cloud cover today. This effect isn't that different than I would find on my K10D - I always pre-focus this lens or shoot in AF.C for sports.

I'll add the images to this post later.

Please understand I wasn't "testing," I was just "trying."

I repeated this three times with the same effect. The fourth time I manually brought the focus "close" using the Quick Shift function and then used AF rear button - lock was almonst instantaneous.

FWIW I am not bothered by this. If I need to shoot live action with AF.C I'll use my K10D (or later a K-5). I'm just trying to draw lines around this camera so I know when NOT to use it. Because of the sensor this will be my primary camera until I get a K-5 (or better) except in those cases where the K-01 isn't suited to waht I want to do.

Looking at the image in Playback I can see operator error despite SR Confirmation, which is what I was really trying out. I need much practice creating a stable platform to use this camera for telephoto. So far the DA40Ltd. is a dream
