Why no dpreview review of the K-01?

I'd have thought Ricoh-Pentax would have sent them a copy to play with... But no review on site...

?

They are busy looking through the dictionary for more bad words to use on the camera. Give them a few.

It came out at a time of a large array of new cameras which makes it hard to fault them for not getting to it immediately. Also, in their defense, its a weird one to place into a category and will require some out of the box thinking to do it right (which will take more time and effort).

Could be demand. I'm sure there's a bigger crowd out there who want to see the Canon 5D MKIII, Nikon D800, Nikon D4, and Fuji X-Pro 1 reviewed first. In any case, they've got a bunch of cameras to go through.

AFAIK they take quite some time to test any camera. No offense, but do us a favor: don't go asking questions like this since it creates an air of uneasiness

If you look at DP® you can see gazillions of questions like yours asking why the yesterday-released camera xyz doesn't have a preview/review. No wonder so many people leave and don't come back.

Looks like DP Review doesn't know how Pentax does stop down metering.

Pentax K-01 Hands-on Preview: Digital Photography Review

" ... First impressions

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, reactions to the Pentax K-01 are mixed here in our Seattle office. We've no doubt that the camera will attract its share of ardent admirers and passionate detractors. Yet these are secondary concerns when evaluating a camera as a photographic tool, rather than an avatar of modern design. And there's no escaping that fact that the K-01 is a heavy camera that is not particularly comfortable to hold without using a second hand supporting the lens.

We certainly applaud Pentax's rather bold decision to develop a camera that is natively compatible with its vast range of K-mount lenses. Yet the potential downside of using a camera with a contrast-detect AF system on legacy lenses designed to work with a phase-detection AF gives us pause. One would reasonably expect relatively slow AF performance. And in our relatively limited handling with an admittedly pre-production model, we find nothing to suggest AF times are going to be very rapid.

For exisiting Pentax users the trump card of the K-01 may very well lie in its from-the-ground-up live view implementation. With its mirrorless design and MF peaking capability, the K-01 has the potential to offer significantly better shooting experience with legacy manual focus lenses than the K-5. Of course,we await the chance to put a production model through our studio tests and thoroughly evaluate operational speed and image quality."

For dpreview this was a decidedly fair preview, excepting the error about aperture coupling and stop-down metering pre-KA lenses. I'm just a schmuck from St. Louis and I figured that out the second day. without help from the manual, which help doesn't exist - more's the pity.

What is the difference between lenses designed for phase detection AF and for Contrast detection AF?

Interesting take on it. Their choice of lens for the GX1 was a mistake - the new 14-42 compact zoom is getting SLAMMED in all the user reviews - lots of glitches with it.

I don't think DPR will appreciate a camera like the K-01.
Its strongest point is the K-mount compatibility and better size for the APS-C format MILC.
The first point, DPR will just glance over since they can't conceptualize the many DA/FA/etc lenses avaliable to Pentax.
The 2nd point they will list as a negative for somehow not being like the NEX with a small body.
If Pentax had released that mystery recessed lens with the K-01, it may still make up for point#2, but then its not out yet.
