Are mirrorless "girlie" cameras?

An interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal says that the success of mirrorless cameras in Japan has been in attracting more female photographers who want the high quality of a larger sensor but don't want to lug round a bulky DSLR. It quotes one survey as showing that 75% of DSLRs are male-owned, but 70% of mirrorless are female owned.

I wonder if this is just a Japanese phenomenon or if this will translate to the USA and Europe also?

Mike

I think mirrorless cameras are the mainline future for both genders.

I think calling a camera girly is a bit... Well I won't go into that. But it's probably got a lot to do with the smaller lenses mirrorless cameras tend to have, and women, for some unknown reason, don't seem to enjoy having hard, metallic cylinders that weigh a ton and cost a fortune.

For whatever reason, men seem to like having these long, fast and expensive lenses. Perhaps so they can feel safe thrusting it into hazardous situations at various angles and known that their SDM motors won't fail, no matter how old their gear gets. They enjoy spraying away with super fast burst rates, with good rubberised ergonomics for better grip.

I just can't think why...

Nothing Girlie about a Leica M9..

The term "Mirrorless" covers a very broard spectrum of cameras.

In this modern age where size defines one's masculinity, of course shooting with less than a full sized cameras are girlie.

Real men are secure enough to shoot a mirrorless if it suits their needs.
