I think there's a problem in that, according to some K-01 users on this forum, the K-01 does not work well with all PK lenses, so if Pentax were to advertise that, they'd be inviting trouble.

I think of the present PK lens issue with the K-01 can almost be compared with the issues that mirrored lens cause (and also any lens cause which has a slower aperature; say 5.xxx) when it causes the focusing screen to black out.

I've used literally over one half of the entire existing Pentax PK lens line; and over fifty "legacy" lens; some going back to the early 80's and earlier. I''ve found that the K-01 works well with any lens as long as it starts with an aperature of above f4.5. It it starts below that it may in fact run into a few issues. Also the same with lens' which do not have a constant aperature over their zoom range - (strictly) as an example - a 100-500mm lens with an f4.4-5.9. At the 5.9 end one also might run into issues.

Is the K-01 perfect, no. But any lens issue I've seen is also easily adapted to.

Well, from the PF review of the K-01, it seems to struggle a bit with the 100 Macro, and a couple of users have reported issues at the long end of the 18-55 (which of course is f/5.6 and thus supports your theory). There might be enough dodginess with AF performance on a few lenses that Pentax needs to be careful of how they advertise the K-01, especially if they target it at "newbie" users who expect the K-01 to be more appliance than camera.

And, of course, as Monochrome stated, Pentax wants to sell XS lenses!

I suppose, but there is only one XS lens and that is generally sold packaged with a K-01 already. We don't even have a road map indicating future XS lenses. Not a very good reason at this point for not promoting the fact that other lenses are compatible (even if auto focus doesn't work the best, seems like manual focus is working well).

  1. "Wants to" (sell XS lenses) in the Hoya product model might differ from "Will" in the Ricoh product model
  2. K-01 is a MF dream machine. Were I Pentax wanting to exploit an unanticpated userr experience I would redesign/re-market the K-Zero line as a manual focus platform
    1. which won't happen, since it is a new-market, new-user wedge product

That does seem counter to a strong marketing point - but perhaps K-mount backward compatibility is not something viewed by non-Pentax users in a positive way - like maybe it is itnerpreted as "old." We, of course, know the strength of the KAFn mounts, so perhaps there is no value net value to promoting it.
Do agree with that.
Could be down the target market, if there is one.
Someone getting into photography might not necessarily be confident about buying a 25 year old lens to go with their modern, flashy K-01...especially when they hear the lens is manual focus.
Horses for courses.
