Three videos I made with my pentax K-01

Edited/added on April 2, 2013 :

Instead of creating a new thread just for one video, I thought I could add the video in this previous thread.
This was during Momocon 2013 in Atlanta on March 8th, a gaming and animé convention (mostly composed of people 15-25 y.o)
Filmed with a Pentax K-01 and a Pentax SMC P DA Fisheye 10 mm - 17 mm - F/3.5-4.5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, I just wanted to share with you some videos I made with a pentax K-01

The first one was for a breakdancing workshop :

And the second one was at an anime convention :

Wow that is some nice videowork. Sitting on my tiny laptop, so no commends on the noise or anything.

Thank you Ron
I applied a lot of noise reduction effect for the interview in order to get that result but that affected the pinch of their voice. If people are interested I can post the original video with no noise reduction effect applied to compare.

Slow-mo effect on the convention video is very well-done. None of that choppy slow-mo most people will try to do with 24fps dslr cameras.

A fellow convention goer. That was a nice video. Mind sharing your shooting techniques and settings?

Sure,

Nothing exceptional really.

For shooting techniques, everything has been filmed by hand. No steadycam but I really wish I had one.

For settings, I shot everything at 1280*720 at 60p to get that slowmotion effect.

I wished I could use my manual prime (50mm f2.0) but you can't change the video settings even though you're in manual mode.
I've tried with the manual prime lens and the camera will pick the settings by itself and it wouldn't let me shoot the video at shutter speed 1/2000.

So I had no choice but to use my automatic 18-55 f3.5 to be able to set an appropriate shutter speed (and avoid the blur as much as possible when doing the slow motion)

While editing, I've increased the saturation and luminosity a little bit.

And that's pretty much it.

By the way, since you also have a k-01, have you also noticed some sound noise while recording video with the k-01 ?
That's very annoying to me, I got that sound noise even with an external microphone

Just a general white noise sound? Yeah, I've had trouble configuring the levels to get good sound quality when using an external mic.

However, without an external mic, I've been pretty happy with the sound.

Taken with the K-01 (shake reduction turned off):

Noise with Mic

I've found that if i go to the settings and turn the volume level down for the external mic, it helps a lot. Then you can just turn it up in post. But I shot a short doc with my k-01 that looks great, but the noise from the mic was awful. I had to experiment until I could record decent sound.

Your videos are great btw. The dance workshop video is really well done. You're a great editor (sound is good, too).

I've made another thread about the sound problem with the K-01 in this forum

But once again, just listen at the difference between this video shot with the K-01 :

And this one shot by another camera at the same place :

Can you hear the hissing sound ?

The audio problem is AGC, and the only way to eliminate it is by turning off the mic (0 setting on internal or external mic).

Workaround is output audio to Audacity 2.0 (free) and use the noise reduction controls (conservatively). In my experience, lowering the gain (mic volume) has no practical effect in eliminating the problem on the K-01.

I don't generally post here, but here is an example in a challenging environment - be kind I'm just now learning videography and the editing process:

Lens is the 35-year-old 35-105 f/3.5. Mic is the (very nice but heavy as the K-01 body) Opteka VM-200. Come to think of it the lens was heavier than the mic, and bracket was about as heavy. A rather solid set up.
