Pixel peep no good

Is it just me or is the pixel peeping on the K-01 not that effective. I can't focus any better with it on and in some cases I find it even harder. I was really hoping it would be more like the pixel peeping on the Ricoh GXR. Is there something I'm missing with this feature? anyway to tweak it?

I think you probably mean "focus peaking". (can't help you with your question, sorry!)

on landscape and still subjects.. I use live view and zoom in.. then manually focus (turn off AF) then step down the lens (if manual aperture is available)... not sure about the K-01, but that's what I used to do on my old K-5 and it worked great.

Hm, make sure focus peaking is turned on in the menu. The lens you are using should be wide open and reasonably fast. If it is a wide angle and has a huge DoF it will not be possible to focus very accurately, especially near infinity. Always stop down after focusing. Don't use peaking with slow lenses. The DoF of the peaking is not accurate to the DoF of the final shot (unless maybe you are using optical preview). Press the info button to temporarily 'zoom in' on the lcd screen. Use it with manual lenses with a reasonable focus throw or to finally adjust using quickshift
