Only owned the camera a week, and now the battery is bad

I left the camera plugged into USB overnight by accident. Woke up with a completely dead battery. Put it in the charger, and the LED is blinking. Looked it up in the manual, and that indicates the battery is bad and needs to be replaced. This is the Pentax battery that came with the camera... come on, it should be able to handle one full discharge and still come back to life.

Did it get a full charge when you first unpacked the camera before it got any use? If not it may have not appreciated a heavy discharge before a few normal charge cycles.

It might be that the charge in the battery is so low (or "clumped" in one part of the battery) that the charger can't detect the battery properly. You could try letting the battery sit for a couple hours before putting it in the charger, just to see if things even out. Just a thought.

Well, after an hour on the charger, suddenly the light stopped blinking and stays on solid. So, hopefully it's fine, but was so low on charge the charger had no idea what to do with it.

Useful to know for a heavily flattened battery.

Battery is still working fine. Put it through its paces in the cold this weekend while hunting sitting around doing nothing in the woods.

Glad you fixed it. 'Dead' batteries can often be brought back to life by cycling them. Normally their life increases over the course of the first few cycles.
