Congrats on your first K-01 'shoot'! The increase in LiveViewing and one-handing with my dSLR was one of the first side-effects of the K-01 that I noticed, too. I don't shoot much video, so I set the Red Button to turn focus peaking on-off. I don't mind twisting the mode knob to video if needed.

After messing around with both lenses this morning, I discovered that the Tamron SP 24-135MM F3.5-5.6 is sharper than the Pentax FA 50mm F1.4 at the same settings. I didn't expect that. So I'll work with my Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited on both cameras and compare against the Tamron (the beast - but a nice one). I really want to stay with the primes for the K-01. I have some investigation to do.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll get right on it.

The 50/1.4 is bright, but not that sharp (like some people I know ) - epsecially wide open. Over the years, the 50/1.7-1.8 series generally has a better reputation for sharpness. Of course, individual copies vary, and the 50/1.4 can do okay stopped down. Most reviews of your Tammy Beast praise it for sharpness.

And now that I've finished laughing, a report on my messing around with lenses. The Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited is so much better than the 50/1.4 for sharpness that I think that is the walking around lens for me - it matches or is slightly better than the Tammy Beast (had to do that comparison on the K-5, Tammy Beast is too heavy for the K-01). AND I have found I own another prime that works very well on the K-01 (balance and weight are acceptable), a wide angle Pentax DA 14mm F2.8 ED(IF), so all I need for now is a small 70 mm prime - suggestions anyone?

If you have the budget, the K-01 loves the DA Limiteds. For a budget choice, the little F35-70 3.5-4.5 zoom is slightly bigger than a FA50/1.4, so it fits well on the K-01, focuses fast (short focus throw), and it has pretty good optics.

The F35-70 can be a little quirky - it has a "macro" (more like "a little closer") mode, and the minimum focus distance in non-macro is about two feet, so I sometimes get in a dead zone between the two and have to switch modes and zoom with my feet. But a quirky lens on a quirky camera seems like a good match.

I'll second what THoog said about the F 35-70.

Oh, yeah, and for some reason, the gaudy green/orange markings on the F35-70 actually look good on a Pandatrooper K-01! While the DA 70 Ltd can run circles around it, the F35-70 does pretty well for a little zoom.

I shot this Red Hot Poker with both the DA 40 XS and the F35-70, and the 40 was a little better (sorry, don't have that shot where I can get to it), but I was surprised at how well the F35-70 did. (The front coating on mine might be getting a little worn - I usually shoot it with a rubber hood, just to be sure.)

I bet it'd look as good on an all black body, will see if I can find one to try. btw-I got a lot of attention for the K-01 last night, other photographers wanted to know what the heck that brick was. They all had huge Nikons with even larger lenses (maybe that's why they all had tripods, hum? )

And the photos are impressive. This makes my decision easier, although I do yearn for the 77mm, budget constraints will probably rule it out for a while.

Have there been any studies of increased back/neck injuries in Canikon shooters, compared to Pentax?

The DA 70 Ltd and/or FA 77 Ltd are on my wish list, but in the meantime, the F35-70 will do. I think I paid less than $50 for mine. The EXIF says those were both shot at 70mm; they might be "macro" mode (not sure how it's reported by the camera).
