The short answer is: if the camera is unable to know what the selected aperture is (vs actual, e.g. the M lenses), it has no way to tell what the metering is either.

If the camera is aware that the current actual aperture can only be the selected aperture, then it can display metering info (e.g. the TAIR lens). With lenses that remains wide open until you take the photo not in "A" mode, you need to hit the green button to close the aperture and take a light reading to determine the matching speed. Any other time, you could change the aperture setting and the camera would remain unaware until you hit the green button again, hence it is impossible for the camera to display metering information.
