Pentax K-01 Compendium

Before the Mayans predicted the end of the world, Pentaxians predicted that a large blocky meteorite designed by a hipster and available in multiple colors would strike planet Pentax and lead to their extinction...

I was one of the "fools" that pre-ordered the K-01 for full price. I don't regret paying full price at all, as it was at the time the cheapest way to get a hold of the excellent Sony 16 megapickle sensor and use my Pentax glass with AF. As a matter of fact, the K-01 was by far my most-often used camera of 2012...

K-01: 13,686 photos
K-5: 6,524
Q: 7,357

For some of you recent "blockheads" that have taken advantage of the deep discounts, I've been blogging about the brick since early 2012. The posts are scattered among posts for the K-5, Q, and other cameras (Nikon, Panasonic, etc...), so I thought that I'd put all the major links in one place. Here it is, the Pentax K-01 Compendium:

What Blog is This?: Pentax K01 Compendium

There's a lot of great knowledge being shared here in the forum of course, but I hope you find the info on my blog useful and perhaps even mildly entertaining, like a mild salsa.

Glad to see you posting again. I also used my pre-ordered K-01 more than any other camera in 2012 (K-01 3,265; K10D 67) and for the first time used a "still camera" for video. Early winter 2012 materially changed my relationship with PF, Pentax and photography in general, though, sad to say.

Fun stories - thanks for sharing and glad to see people enjoying the camera.
K-01 is fun and from an image quality point, so far (recently got it), I found it better than my K-5.

I reached one conclusion ... the K-01 even though is a Photo/Video camera, it is not photogenic ... it looks better in person .

Appreciate your sharing. It is somewhat disappointing to me that Pentax may let the K-01 line die rather than give it the chops it needs to thrive. It is really a pretty good camera with some very strong points, if a little under-specified. When I am walking around with my FA 31 on it, it has a really nice feel and focusing is pretty decent.

Bump up the fps, buffer size, optional EVF, and give it weather sealing and I think it would match up fine against any of the current MILCs out there.

At about a nickel a shot (with the cost ever decreasing) for such high quality imaging (based on both the tool and operator skills), I'd say you got a very good value. I paid 20% below retail after introduction (but still more than I paid for the K20D at closeout), and I don't regret the purchase one bit. It is a bit amazing and discouraging that Pentax might have managed to kill an entire segment with immense potential - conventional lens mount on a MILC - by putting out a first unit that has been downgraded mostly on style points and not overall imaging capabilities. Well, John, it appears plug-in motorcycles have far more potential life than the K-01 product line.

Nice blog! I LOVE my K-01!! No regrets whatsoever, and it really does look much better in person- I get compliments about it every time I take it out. Very hard to beat for macro work. What a cool camera.

I really enjoyed reading your Blog, well done. Though I only had my K-01 for a day, I feel already that it unjustly got a bad rep from day 1; how unfortunate. It feels like a camera, and not another fancy plastic toy ( though some say it looks like one, how ironic ! )

Ya, been following your blog and photos on flickr for awhile now, good stuff. I also pre-ordered my K-01 but I recouped huge loses on mine, I absolutely hated the 40xs, but there were lots of people who were willing to pay premium for it in which I sold it for more than half the cost of the camera, so I don't feel so bad about the price drop... But it's been my most used camera of 2012 and I'm sure 2013 as well as I will not buy any kind of camera this year, shit is marketing scam all these cameras, K-01 s just fine and people love it when I bring it to shoots, they like the way it looks, go figure...

Well I made 18k shots with my K-01 (I have two off them now), but still it isn't winning (in clicks). It's a great camera to use and I love it.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I use the blog as a scratchpad for ideas and a place to hone my writing. I don't get a ton of traffic so it's mostly a labor of love.

I guess we'll have to see. If anything, Pentax has seen that there is demand at a particular price point.
