Thank you all.

mpmetro is right. The 420ez works. I had tried it, but not in fully manual mode with the shutter speed less than 1/180. (other modes won't trigger the flash at all)

i think I'll wait on purchasing a new flash for now while experimenting with the 420ez.

I did read that the 610 has some glitches when working with the k-01. It seems very confusing figuring out which 3rd party flashes will work.

I'm interested to know, what glitches? I read that the K-01 uses its own AF Assist light instead of the 610's, but I'm not sure if it does so with other flashes too. Can anyone confirm?

This website is a great resource for checking Pentax compatibility.

Manual flash is good to have available, but I use P-TTL 99% of the time because it's dead easy and it works.

Good thread, I learned some things about my brand new K-01.

It is difficult to work out, in that exposure is quite often a bit random anyway as there are so many variables!

the Metz 50-af1 also loses its af assist light on the K-01, only the k-01 af assist lamp will work.

Page 220 of the manual indicates the K-01 will use the AF assist light on the two newest Pentax flashes. I have the AF360 and haven't been able to get it to work. The K-01 only seems to use the built-in AF assist light.
