K-01 and zoom lenses

I'm hoping that my K-01 will arrive in the next few weeks. I was wondering how well it handles the kit zooms - the 18-55, the 50-200 and 55-300s.

I would say it's "meh" with those kit zooms. Primes and lenses wish short focus throw are more suitable for the K-01.

"Meh" meaning that it has difficulty turning them quickly enough? I'm assuming we are talking about a speed issue rather than accuracy here. Is that correct?

I use often the K-01 with the Da18-135mm. The zoom AF is not the fastest, but it is very accurate. Importantly, do update the K-01 firmware as soon as you receive it. The latest firmware 1.02 is a major improvement over the original firmware.

Hope that the comment may help.

I have used mine with 16-50 and it works quite well. A little front heavy, but it is easy to support at the lens zoom ring with left hand. One thing I have noticed is that 16-50 SDM focus works better than it did on K20, especially getting the infinity focus which was a struggle with K20.
However, as Adam has said, the best match / balance is with the primes. For longer focal length zooms you need the tripod support.
Have fun with it when you get it.

It works better with fast lenses and the kitlenses are f5.6 or so and that is limiting the system.

I have never used my K-01 with a kit zoom. In fact, I have never owned a kit zoom.
It worked very well with my (now sold) Sigma 17-50/2.8. It was a bit sluggish with my (now sold) DA55-300, but that was before the new firmware livened things up.
It still works brilliantly with my DA10-17.

And the kit lens needs to be stopped down once or twice for acceptable sharpness. I'm not a fan of the 18-55. I have two copies, and they've spent their lives in the original boxes. I was intending to use my white DA L with my white K-01, but I tried it and was once again disappointed. I will be using the K-01 with the 16-45 and primes. For tele, I will carry the 55-300 or A*300mm f4, depending on what I'm shooting. The 55-300 is a nice lens as long as you don't crop too hard. I don't have a 50-200, but the prevailing opinion is that it is not as good as the 55-300.

I haven't tried it yet, but I expect the 18-135 will work on the K-01 as it does on the K-20D, i.e. acceptably better than the 18-55, not as good as the 16-45. I am satisfied with AF on any of the lenses I've tried, and focus peaking is a great feature, even with auto-focus lenses.

I use mine with the Limited 15/40/70mm for Travel, sometimes icluding the old SMC-M 135/35. But I don't like manual focus on the K-01. It is lacking the focus indicator DSLR have in their view filnder and focus peaking I don't like at all.
Besides that, I use it with a Tamron 17-50/2.8 for landscape photography if I don't have enough space for the big bodies, like the D2x oder the 645D. As I experience 50mm is very often too short for this purpose, I just ordered a Tamron 70-200/2.8, too. It is quite light fpr a 70-200/2.8, I am curious to see how this works. Off course, the Pentax 50-135mm would have been lighter and smaller, but I used to own such a lens at the time I owned a K-20, too, and I was not that happy with the 50-135.

+1 for this comment. I love the K-01 but with standard (f/3.5+) zooms or primes that have a long focus throw the AF is painfully slow (even with the latest firmware).

I love the creamy bokeh of the FA 135mm f/2.8 lens but I rarely use it indoors with the K-01 because that lens has a long focus throw and it usually takes too long to focus.

I think the K-01 is ideally suited to being used with the DA primes that have a shorter focus throw.
