I just tried M 50mm wide open f/2 at about 2 metre ( 5 ft)
The lens is not as sharp as at f/8, however the DOF at f/2 is only about 100mm ( 4 inch).
In the sharp plane, the detail is still quite good.
We should not confuse softness with small DOF
There are millions of these out there. Trust me -- a good portion of them are soft. Unlike say the M/1.7, which is both sharper and faster wide-open.

I use my A 50mm f2 quite often, which is the same lens optically as the M version, it is not bad wide open and is great by f4. I have a couple M versions too, I haven't done any side by side comparisons to see if there is any sample variation though. One of my M's might be at a disadvantage since it had some fungus, but it has been cleaned.

keep in mind that the F2 version of the 50mm lens is the cheapest one, and thus also the least sharp.
True... but it should be sharper than that.

I just updated the K-01 firmware and followed advice of another thread for focussing in manual by zoom with SR off.
Here is the Pentax-M 1:2 50mm (32 years old) at f/8
I focussed on Spiderman saying "Don't"
On the Eizo the image is sharp up to 140% screen zoom.

I agree of you guys, using the lens at f/2 is soft but magically becomes a lot sharper when you go over f/2.8, I don't know why it is now a linear correlation, but if I have realised the K-01 manual lens mechanism, I wouldn't use the lens at f/2 at all, only f/4 - f/11. Most of the time I use the M50mm f/2 on film camera, because the film grain (of my Ilford HP5+) will make sharpness less important (or should we say accutance?)

Why SR off? Can you link to the thread?

Hi _tmb
Link is

And Page 100 of the K-01 manual recommends to disable SR and use a tripod for close in work
and with low shutter speeds.

On my first impressions, I love the K-01 with the Pentax-M 50mm f2.

I just received mine yesterday. First time using a manual lens with my K-01... Had all the settings all primed, so the K-01 was ready to start shooting.

I took around 5 shots indoors at night, on f2.. While most looked alright, in loading them up on my MacBook, they were all mostly out of focus. Apart from the one below... I dont think its too bad.
