K-01: FA 50 1.4 Hunting?

Howdy-

Love the brick. Slapped on the FA 50 1.4 and the focus hunts likes crazy? Any similar experience? Might I have a setting wrong?

Thanks for any ideas.

I assume you've updated the firmware to the latest version? Other than that, the FA lenses tend to hunt more in AF than the DA and DA* lenses. My FA 77 doesn't hunt that much but it hunts more than the DA* 55mm 1.4 lens. The FA 135mm 2.8 hunts like crazy indoors under low light and/or with moving subjects.

Did you upgrade the firmware? Can you try the FA on some other camera, to confirm that the problem isnt the lens? Because in theory that should be a great combo

Thanks, I'll check the firmware.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never updated camera firmware, this will give me a much needed chance to learn how. . .

I updated to 1.02, AF is still bad, to the point of giving up and using MF instead.

How is the lighting and what's the subject you focus on? Contrast detection doesn't work at all if it doesn't get enough contrast to work with.

Neither my NEX 5N nor the Q have any difficulty in the same lighting conditions with the same subject. Focus does lock, but it locks on the wrong subject.

I use my FA50 1.4 on my K-01 exclusively. The focus is very quick and accurate using FW Ver. 1.02.

I did try several of my other lenses on the brick after I received it and only really had problems with the HSM on my two Sigma lenses.

No such issue here. The FA50 and K-01 work well for me. What focus mode do you use? I always use the centre point only.

All my autofocus lenses are very underwhelming on the K-01. Sigma 10-20 f3.5, Sigma 80-200 f3.8, F35-70 f3.5-4.5. Sucks really.

I've found the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is the fastest of any lens' that are currently marketed for PK - even when used on a K-01 with or without firmware. Unfortunately most people will pass on this lens for a number of reasons (forgetting also that one typically gets what they pay for, and to be good optically one must sacrifice a few items); the size and weight of the lens (especially that 82mm front end filter) and also the cost.

But also noting; it's optically one of the best lens for PK ever made. It even approaches the optical ability of some of Pentax's fixed lens

If your K-01 locks on to the wrong object, try changing the AF mode to select and make the AF square as small as possible (you press ok, then you can move it around and if you use the scroll wheel, the square will get bigger or smaller). I don't know, but my K-r misfocuses (using PD AF) as often as my K-01. I can't say the K-01 is bad at focusing. I've even used it in a dark bar with the 18-55mm kit lens, and the AF locked. With the DA 35mm f2.4 and 40mm XS primes the AF is very fast.

focus with zooms

I have two F zooms and two macro manual lens, 50 and 100, and was thinking of getting a K-01 to go with my Kx. I can't afford to buy the new primes too. I was even going to sell the 40 that goes with it. So even with the latest firmware update the Pentax F 35-70 3.5-4.5 still does poorly? Any one try the F 70-210?

In good light my FA50/1.4 is snappy and with FW1.02 doesn't seem to cycle stop-to-stop any more. In dim light, such as when my son's new "aunt-in-law" tried to take a picturee of me in a dark wood paneled room in a tan shirt - it never did lock (FW ver. 1.00). Then again, I can't focus a K50/1.4 on an LX very well in that kind of light, so what do we expect?

I would have moved the focus point to the edge of my face or shoulder, then recomposed - and I wouldn't even have thought about it. The "aunt" just went off on my "crap camera." Oh. how I would have enjoyed to say something about the crap photographer.

Of all my lenses the F35~70 is the slowest to lock - on the lens test thread that's a pretty consistent observation.

I don't have any trouble with my F35-70 f/3.5-4.5, but I don't use it indoors, either. I don't think the K-01 (or any other Pentax on LiveView) does well indoors with f/3.x-4.x zooms.
