K-01 & pef (raw) ?

Hi dear All,

I'm brand new in Pentax world, jumping in with a yellow K-01
Still trying, and reading and trying...

Two questions to the expert:
1) is beside DNG also RAW/PEF available on K-01, I can't find in Manual
2) how to apply camera settings saved into RAW too (Custom Image, Digital Filter, Lens corrections...) in "SilkyPix 3 for Pentax".

Thanks for explanation

I believe that the K-01 will only produce DNG files. You can apply the custom image settings in the pentax digital camera utility software.

I can answer question 1.

No. PEF is not available on the K-01 (or K-30) and is unlikely to be available on any Pentax camera in the future.

No I can't proceed DNGs in pentax digital camera utility. I tried v4.40. The parameter changes don't show up in Preview. Even EXIF readout is empty for K-01.
Or do I something wrong?

pentax digital camera utility is for higher end cameras such as K5, not for K01 and k30. k01 raw files are processed by its own software come with the camera.

I suggest you use some other raw converter, like Fast Stone, Aperture, Lightroom,,.. there are many, even free ones, google for a list or search these forums for reviews. But if you are planning on using the presets you might as well choose the digital filters in camera and shoot jpeg.
Honestly, the Pentax camera software is pretty complicated, you might as well avoid it (though some people like how it renders colours)

@grahame: it's a pity by PENTAX purposely cripling it's PDCU. DNG is DNG. Only for simulating of the in-camera-processing was tempting. The GUI is anyhow horror. Silkypix is a joke too.

@Na Horuk: thanks for encouragement. I'm fine with LR und C1. My Canon DPP (Canon Digital Photo Professional sw) produces the best quality. So I wanted try Pentax's PDCU.

I'm very happy with the K-01, but still lot to learn.

Thanks for

There are plus and minus points to DNG, files are bigger and always the same size as there is no compression, it is just the Raw data, The big advantage is you can use any version of Photoshop or Elements from CS2 onwards for opening the Raw files, you don't have to update Photoshop every time you update your camera.

Pretty sure modern dng files have some compression. They are different sizes, between 9 and 15MB. But your point still stands.

Pentax added lossless compression to DNG in the K-7.

The UI for silkypix is clunky but it is quite good at basic processing of images once one learns all the controls and tweaks.
