Q view finder on K01

Is anyone using the Pentax View Finder O-VF1 sold as a Pentax Q accessory on the K-01. If so, what is your experience? Sorry if this has been discussed before.

I expect the O-VF1 would work reasonably well for framing the FA 31 mm and be close enough for lenses in the 28 to 35mm range if you are willing to live with the framing being a bit looser or tighter than what you see through the finder. You might want to consider some of the other optical finders on the market (Voigtlander, etc.) if you want to match a different focal length.

I picked up a clean 1950s 50mm Voigtlander finder for a fraction of what modern finders sell for and haven't used it a whole lot since it only matches 2 of my lenses. With the Pentax finder costing almost as much as a used K-01 body and more than a Q you may want to try a secondhand optical finder intended for an old rangefinder (leica, voigtlander, zorki, yashica, etc.) to see how you like shooting with it; some of the options are comparatively inexpensive.

The need to pre-focus, use hyperfocal distances, work off the distance scale on the lens or blindly trust the autofocus to catch what you want when using the finder with the screen turned off does make it feel more like you are shooting with an old film camera. On the plus side having instant image review available makes the learning curve with a finder faster than it was with film.

I think some people also use an lcd loupe, which makes the lcd screen look more like a viewfinder.

The view does match the FA31mm, but the viewfinder needs some altering because it is looking to low, needs looking up a little.

On the Q the viewfinder works well with the 01 lens, you can turn off the screen which extends the battery life.

For the K-01 (and the Q) a better, and cheaper, option is a Hoodman Lupe or similar, really good when used with manual focus lenses, works with any focal length and in bright light. It does increase the size of your kit almost to medium format dimensions, but it works a treat.

Thanks for the input folks. I posed the question because I just bought a K-01 and already had the viewfinder for a previously purchased Q.

I tried out the viewfinder today with a 21mm da ltd on the K01. It worked out very well for street shooting. Because of the nature of street shooting, I was using the viewfinder to point more than frame, but it worked out very well. Subjects seemed to be centered just as I had shot them. I was very pleased and will continue to experiment.
