That line shouldn't be grayed out. Try a reset to factory defaults (Wrench, 3, Reset Custom Settings). If that doesn't work, call

Pentax Customer Care.

That's what I'll do. I mounted and dismounted several times and at long last I got AF.
But, the noisy AF jammed the camera and I had to take the battary out.

Just for the record, the AF should be noisy. How did it 'jam' up the camera?

I had same problem a couple weeks ago. Ended up exchanging it for a new kit, which works perfectly. In my case the AF was intermittent.

I was trying to AF an object in a dim light, the motor struggle on and the camera jammed, lost all controls and was not able to switch off.
It's ok now.

I did have the "Autofocus method" grayed out. However when I set the dial to M I was able to change the AF method.

I'll be straight forward here:
1) Sometimes we get posters claiming the camera is broken, but then it turns out they are just using it wrong. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Its not hard to fix, just have to learn how to do it right. We specifically had threads about the XS on the K-01 not AFing, which turned out that the lens was just not fully mounted. We also had people breaking the AF by forcing the focus ring while the AF/MF switch was set to AF.
2) On the other hand, if you are doing everything right and still have problems, it might be a good idea to get the camera exchanged. Maybe it got damaged during transport or something. "Exchanged" is better than "fixed." We don't get a lot of reports of people getting broken/defective K-01s, but its not impossible. You might also want to buy extended warranty. Extended warranty is a great thing to have for any camera, because cameras are relatively expensive electronic equipment that you carry around and use in all sorts of environments. These warranties sometimes even include a free checkup and cleaning, which is awesome.

I just put my beloved K-01 in the mail for exchange because it was defective. The first time I turn the camera on for the day, the first screen image and shot are jagged and pixelated. Cycling power clears up the problem but that's not the way these cameras are supposed to work. It also makes a faint constant buzzing noise when nothing else is going on.

I posted samples in the Transcend Wifi card thread if you want to see what the bad images look like and a few more details about why it's the camera and not the card etc.

BH didn't even blink - they issued me an RMA within an hour of submitting the claim. Lucky for me they still have some of the White K-01's with 40mm lens in stock. They're closed for Passover so I probably won't see the camera for over a week.
