Help needed with Pentax-F 50mm 1.7

I need help with the lens I just bought - Pentax-F 50mm 1.7 on my K-01. it stays wide open no matter what mode the camera is in and also there is a sign F-- on the screen. I suspect I'm not switching something though i expected it to work like regular lens...Please help.

When you mount it, does the lens go fully and click into place? My Vivitar 28mm came yesterday, and the first few tries I couldn't turn it fully for some reason. Then I tried turning it very slowly, and it did go until the click.

Set the aperture ring to "A"

I can't switch it to A, the ring goes as far as 22 and not any further (next mark is A but it doesn't go that far)

Yep, lenses with an A setting on the aperture ring generally have some sort of button for that setting.
You can also go into the camera menu and set "allow aperture ring", then you can go to M mode (without auto-iso) and you can use the lens manually. It will stop down according to the aperture ring setting and you can use the green button for metering. That is how manual (non-A) lenses work. But yours has an A setting, so use that
