Manual shutter speed?

I shoot mostly daytime and indoors on manual... But wanting to try some night photography.

Setting the shutter speed, I understand that the K-01s range is between 1/4000sec to 30sec.

What if I want to go beyond 30sec? Can I manually assign a longer shutter speed?

You will need to use bulb mode to go past 30 seconds.

No problem! Have fun with it and definitely read the whole manual.

You will also want to trip the shutter externally without touching the camera - and that is where the IR remote comes in (I don't think that the K-01 has an port for a wired release). You will also want to set the camera up for a one button push, i.e., rather than holding the button down by had for the entire, say 35 seconds, you push it once to start it and then 35 seconds later, push it again to close the shutter. That way, you will not be jostling the camera with the shutter open.

Having a timer or stopwatch is very handy. We carry one each in our camera kit. One old style so there is no light like on a mobile phone.

With long exposures it isn't that important.
That 0.5 seconds of shake in a recording of 30+ seconds won't be that visiable.

You can play using the B setting and get shots like this which is a composite of several images

The technique is briefly explained in the Flickr description, click on the image. Very creative and loads of fun, though you do get some funny looks from any passer by, taking photographs in the dark - really, He must be mad, which is probably true LOL.

Not that the remotes are all that expensive, but there is an even more effective way... Simply cover the lens with something even as elementary as a black piece of cardboard when opening and closing the shutter. Plus since there isn't a mirror flopping around - the vibration deadens out in far less than one second.
