I have a Bell & Howell Z680AF-P, too, that I bought for and have used successfully with my K200D, but I can't get it to work with my K-01. I also get the no-flash or strobe effect.

The only way I can use it with the K-01 is in the slave mode with the on-camera flash. It reverts to manual that way, and the power ratio has to be reset for each shot, but at least it's usable, and the flexibility of an away-from-camera light source is handy.

So, is there any resolution to this? I have the Bell & Howell flash and the K01 and would like to be able to use them together.

The only way I've found to use these flashes with the K-01 is in manual mode. You'll just have to work out the appropriate aperture and power setting for the distance to the object. Trouble is though, every time you cycle through the P-TTL mode while adjusting the power setting, you get the strobe effect. It's not ideal, but at least you can still get some use out of the flash.

I'm wondering if the answer is to use the Pentax AF280T flash in auto mode.

730AFPK and K-01

I'm glad I checked the forum, I've been meaning to call Pentax support over the same issue. My flash is a Promaster 7500EDF Digital, a Pentax dedicated P-TTL flash that works great on my older Pentax Dslr, but only fires at full power on the K-01. Just checked Promasters support page for that model of flash and on the spec's page it states "Flash upgradeable by your PROMASTER dealer", It's good to know my K-01 isn't broken.

Edit:
I just checked my backup P-TTL flash, a Vivitar 730AFPK (I hadn't used it in so long I forgot I even had it) and it works flawlessly with the K-01. I wished I had thought to do that 6 months ago.

Are you still happy with the 730AFPK on K-01? What mode do you set the camera and flash? From what I have been able to gather, 730AFPK is TTL and not P-TTL; and K-01 supports only P-TTL.

Thanks.

I just went through all this today myself with my flashes. I was getting ready for a Father-Daughter dance tonight and wanted to do some multiple flash stuff with triggers and the K-01 (the kids at my daughters school LOVE my Yellow K-01 and the smiles make the pictures so much better). Got the same delayed fast strobe effect on camera and no firing at all with triggers that have worked with 3 Pentax dSLRs. My AF16 and AF400 both work in manual mode on the camera. The Z680-AF-P won't fire in manual mode on the camera. My new AF540 works perfectly with the K-01. Decidedly disappointed in the K-01, this is just another way in which it doesn't perform in a way one would expect for a Pentax camera with a hotshoe.

Just an update on the strobbing effect of my Rokinon D980AFZ-PZ and similar flashes when set to P-TTL mode and mounted on the K-01. I've got it to stop strobbing, but it still only works as a manual flash where you can adjust the power output manually. If you insulate one of the pins on the bottom of the flash so it's not making contact with the corresponding contact in the hot shoe, the flash doesn't strobe when mounted on the K-01. When looking at the flash's mount with the back of the flash toward you, the pin to insulate is the one in the upper left of the mount. The other three pins in a triangular array remain untouched. I used a small piece of Scotch brand Magic tape over the pin.

While the flash doesn't strobe any longer when set to P-TTL mode and mounted on the K-01, it doesn't work as a P-TTL flash either. It will fire, but at full power. So the flash still only works in manual mode on the K-01, but at least it doesn't strobe when you switch it on or while adjusting the power output when you cycle through the P-TTL setting.

Original poster here. I emailed Pentax and they responded that they do not test or warrant their cameras for use with third-party external flash units. They are unwilling to help. They cautioned that using any third-party flash could damage the camera (any Pentax DSLR) and advised using a Wein SafeSync hotshoe adapter with third party flashes. Not very helpful! It would be nice to know why it works fine on the K-x but not at all on the K-01.

"We do not test our cameras for compatibility with third-party flashes so we cannot tell you what might be the problem when you try using the Bell & Howell flash on the K-01. This flash may not be compatible with the camera, or it may only work in manual mode. We do recommend that if you do try to use it on the camera (or any PENTAX camera), you use a Wein SafeSync hotshoe adapter with it to protect the camera."

Mike , that basically is a cop out .

I'm the same as you : I started with Metz circa 1970 when I got a Mecablitz 500 as a package deal with a Rolleiflex T .

A few years later ( 1976 ) I bought a new Pentax KM , and continued to use said Mecablitz with it - manual cameras ; manual flash .

A bit later , I had worked my way up the Pentax range : KM , KX , ME , ME Super , MX (x2) , LX (x2) .... by that time dedicated flash , with TTL and OTF metering was a thing , and I had two Metz 45-CT5 units with the dedicated SCA units for Pentax - never failed .

I used my two LX cameras professionally for about 20 years , never seeing a need to upgrade ( short of moving to medium format , but there were Hasselblads at work so I never bothered ) .

Only when it came to 2004 and the *istD was introduced did I think of changing . I tried an *istD and liked it , but baulked at the cost ; out a year later I bought a used one for about half price . Later I got a second one , although I was also still shooting film with my LX's . I had never before been interested in automatic focus , because I had no problem focussing with my eyes , but once I had an AF capable body , I bought a few AF lenses . Then , having those lenses , I bought an AF film body - the MZ-S : it was a good successor to the LX , although not as flexible .

So , that was me until 2014 , and the Commonwealth Games here in Glasgow . I thought to update my cameras - I bought a new K-3 , and a new K-01 as a backup body , very pleased with both .

Even then , talk of a FF Pentax had been rife for many years and I had held off so long .

By now , my old Metz flashes , which had served me well for so many years , were outdated . While the *istD had supported standard TTL , and OTF metering , as had the LX and the MZ-S , the new cameras did not , so I was looking at P-TTL . ( I had already been using Nikon kit with their iTTL at work , but I am not a Nikon fan ) . I bought my first Metz 54 MZ-4 flash , with the SCA 3702 adaptor - this worked great on the K-3 but not on the K-01 .

I subsequently bought another 3 54 MZ-4 , four 45 CL-4 Digital , and one 70 MZ-5 guns , all of which worked fine with the k-3 , and the *istD cameras , but never the k-01 .

Later , I got a K-1 and the same was true .

Now , all of these flashes are the older SCA module type , and they work fine with my SLR and DSLR cameras , but not the K-01 .

I also have a set of four Cactus V6II transceivers , which I use for a 3 flash off-camera setup , again fine with K-1 and K-3 , but won't talk to the k-01 .

I also have seven 'dumb' Elinchrome flasheads , which I use with 'dumb' wireless triggers on the DSLRs ; TBH never tried them with the K-01 , which I only bought as a backup body , and mainly use at family/social outings where a DSLR would be overkill . BTW , the K-01 is a perfect partner with the DA Limiteds , of which I have all 5 , bought one at a time . I love that it uses the same lenses ( including all my cherished SMC-M lenses from my film days ) and the same batteries as my other cameras .

I did a search here to see if others had similar issues ; while many similar questions have been posed , there seems to be no definitive answer . I am only prompted to write here because today I just purchased a Metz 26 AF2 flash - this will be my first non SCA Metz flash ( but Pentax dedicated ) , so I will be curious to see how it turns out .

I would also be interested to hear the comments of others .

Regarding discussions on other forums , I have always tried to have a compact 'carry everywhere' camera . In the film days this was my Rollei 35S ( which I still have ) . After going digital , I tried and rejected numerous compact cameras , until I got a Canon G11 . I was unhappy with the image quality , so that was partly why I got the k-01 .

More recently , I was given a broken Canon G12 , which I managed to repair ; I will probably give it to my son , but I'm now thinking of buying a Pentax Q series camera to try it out ....

I wonder if the flash issues will apply to it too ?
