Discovered it goes quiet when left on and goes into sleep mode.
Touch the shutter, it wakes up with a crash as the shutter retracts revealing the sensor.
It's like it is struggling to hold the curtain back

I'm just thinking out loud here... does the K-01 have the same 'hard reset' feature as other Pentax DSLR's? Hold down 'Menu' whilst turning the camera on I *think*
Thanks
I tried reset in menu, no change.

Does your camera take photos?

The sound you describe seems basically normal and due to the shake reduction. Have a look at this thread...
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-01/220819-my-white-k-01-finally-...lly-white.html

Take a photo with your camera and judge the image. Check to see if shake reduction is on or off. Does the stabilized active hand appear?

Please don't be hasty with a trans-ocean return.

Good luck

Very nice pictures it takes
SR, dust removal, AF are all off
Certainly not wanting to post it back...
Might start a specific thread and canvass more owners

Might be handy if possible to upload a short vid on youtube regarding the noise, that way people will know for sure if it's normal or not.

Yes. I tried to record it on my phone but it was pretty faint.
Videos recorded on the K-01 have a bit of a background noise but doesn't really sound the same.

I can hear it like 4 inches from the body and quite clearly with my lug against it.
Sounds like static on the radio meets frying egg. Only does it when the shutter is open and sensor exposed.
Definitely not the sensor moving

The first K-01 I got was defective, I had to send it back. I could hear a sizzling noise out of the lens side of the camera if I stuck my ear up close. The noise was there anytime the camera was turned on.

Also, this K-01 wouldn't initialize the sensor properly when turning it on the first time each day (which is the real reason I sent it back). Cycling the power cleared the problem but a new camera shouldn't act that way. I don't know if the sizzling noise was connected to the sensor problem.

Finally, someone had installed v1.02 of the firmware so it appears the camera got touched by someone after the production run. I don't know if it came from the factory that way or if someone at the camera shop did it - I didn't see any evidence the box had been opened when I got it. Since I exchanged it, I'll never know.

On the replacement, the noise was still there but much lower level.

Man, my K-r is super loud when in LV. The K-01 is quieter than my K-r, but its not dead silent. Its one of those noises that you won't notice in everyday use, you will only notice it in a silent room putting your head near the camera. And then you will start listening for it, focusing on it, every time, and it will drive you crazy, even though nobody else even notices it unless you point it out and make them listen. If the camera takes photos normally, stops down aperture correctly, works with long exposures and timer normally, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Guys
If I was around the corner from Adorama, I'd take it in for an exchange.
I want one like BigMikes !

I was looking forward to playing with various viewfinder ideas,
but don't enjoy sticking my face in the fry zone.

Anyway, the thing is marvelous otherwise.
This baby is really great with the Takumars.
Amazing to be able to shoot in Av with the lens stopped down
and get unchanging bright view with perfect sight of depth of feild.

The old 105/2.8 seems right at home

Good point, I'll run it through long exposures etc
cheers
