best small lenses for K-01

I just succumbed to the $249 K-01 deal at Adorama, but I don't think I'll be using the 70-200 with it.

So, this camera has focus peaking, right? So perhaps I should start checking out the local pawn shops. What should I look for?

I know a set of DA Limited lens would be nice on this, but I wasn't even planning on buying a 2nd Pentax right now. So are there good small manual primes I should look for on the used/pawnshop/yardsale market?

My 40 Limited lives on my K-01. Nice combo. The other is my 70 Limited.

I don't know. Normally I'd shoot landscapes, with the K-5 and WR lens and a tripod, but this camera seems to beg for a different style and subject. Perhaps this camera will pull me into street photography?

Subject might depend on what cheap lenses I can find. Agreed the 50/1.7 seems like a good starting point. I wish there was a cheap old 24mm pancake, or a DA21 Ltd for $50. ;-)

Like I said, that would obviously be an excellent way to go, but I wasn't planning on spending any more money and a full DA ltd set would probably turn me into a single father.

Just curious what led you to the 40 Limited rather than the 40 XS?

Had both briefly. Optically no difference for me. The 40 Limited has Quickshift, uses a normal thread diameter with lots of support, and is MUCH better built. Sold the XS to a very happy man and kept my Limited which made me happy and the K-01 resulting price was $152 after the 40XS sale so that was great too.

ROFLMAO!

You might take a look at the F 35-70. Just about the same size as the 50mm but a little more range. Not too expensive, certainly less then $100. $50 on a really good day. For manual, take a look at the Pentax-A 28mm. It's not 21mm but it isn't bad. Not too expensive either, around $100 - 125 in good condition.

The K-01 does well with most of the M primes. Unfortunately, the M20/4 is rather rare and pricey.

I use the F 35-70 a lot when I don't want to bother with manual focus / manual exposure. The optics are good, but it's a little quirky, with a "dead zone" around 2 feet where it is too close for regular mode and too far for macro. I think the K-01 has driven the price up some.

The Ricoh Rikenon P 50/1.7, 28/2.8, and 35-70 manual lenses are all small and light with pretty good optics. They are usually cheaper because people shy away from the Ricoh pin, but five minutes with a screwdriver fixes that (I didn't even bother to check if it was the rounded pin that doesn't cause problems).

The "A" version is a better match for the K-01. The M version requires you to focus, use the green button to meter at your actual aperture, set the shutter speed, then you release the shutter.

WIth the "A" version, you can use Aperture priority or Shutter priority mode and all you have to do is focus and release the shutter.

Actually pentax A 24/2.8 isn't too big. And it is still really good and has aperture control on body... all 28/2.8 are small, good and some of them dirt cheap too.

You can prob get a new XS 40mm on eBay for less than $175 or the 18-55 ii kit lens is an excellent match too!

Several have mentioned inexpensive options with the K-01. Because of the Focus Peaking it works well with MF lenses and many MF lenses are pretty cheap. I like the M28/2.8 and the SuperTak 50/1.4 on it. I'd love to get some A glass for it - an A28 would be first. I have 15/35/40/50/70 in AF and they do well and I have M versions of 28/50 with M42 in 50/55 and an A lens in 85/1.4 that is marvelous on the camera. Even my FE 8mm is terrific on the K-01. None of these MF lenses are very expensive at all.
