If you can afford the DA* 300 then the painful part is over. Even a used K-r should give you some great shots. (Assuming the AF on the K-01 isnt fast enough. It was with my DA55-300).
It has nothing to with focus peaking, even if it is off it will stop down. I do not why it does that, but it is to control the amount of light that falls on the sensor. Just try it, point your K-01 at the sky and it will stop down, cast a shadow over the lens with your hand, and t will open again.
