Middle point and then make the AF spot size as small as possible.

Operating it with the thumb is a great idea. I swap between standard grip with the forefinger, and the waist-level grip with the thumb. The only thing that would make this even more amazing as a waist-level camera is a tilted screen.

@Geomez -- Ron's center-weighted metering is best for snapshots -- street photography -- where you don't have time to think about setting the camera. And his advice to 'make a lot of images and it grows in your hands' is exactly what you want to do. Take pictures!

But in situations where you do have time to compose the shot, try spot exposure -- watch the screen and histogram -- when it looks right, use the AE/L button to lock the exposure. Then focus on whatever part of the scene you want to be sharp, and take the picture.

For both snapshots and composed shots, I use spot focus.
