New K-01 User here :) (pics)

Hi All,

I'm a K-01 noob. Got the body only for $300 - I did not take the XS 40 because I thought I'd rather get the DA 40 Ltd and DA 21 Ltd.

Long story short, I got myself a DA 21 Ltd but the AF was erratic so after struggling to make it work for 3 days I returned the lens. The AF was sometimes ok, but regardless of the AF point types I tried it would misfocus often.

So here I am, got a white brick with no lens yet.

In the mean time I used the K-01 with my telescopes and I like the results so far. At iso200 and 400 the shadow area is much less grainy than my 650D/T4i and even NEX-5. Plus, the K-01 looks to have weak AA filter as the details are simply amazing! Of course I wished the K-01 has a tilting screen for this kind of shots...

Data for both photos: 1,200mm at f/12, iso200, 1/60s

Thanks for looking,

Winston

Did you update the camera firmware before returning the lens?

Great shots. I love the first one.

I read your pb with the DA21mm. Have you tried the DA40mm on the K-01? I found that small lenses with short AF tend to work well on my K-01.

I did try the kit 40 XS and it focuses just fine, problem is, 40mm is too long for me as a general purpose lens

Thanks! I agree K-01 is a good camera, now I'm considering 35/2.4 AL as standard lens - just need to see how the AF is with this one.

35 is practically identical FL to 40mm, so if you didn't like 40, just skip to 21 or 15...

@calsan - I just got a new XS for $90, will use it for a while

@Jimbothescot - Usually 12" dobs comes with a 2" focuser so you'll need a 2" photo adapter (T-adapter) + T-Ring for PK mount. However, coma corrector might be necessary for the dobs due to f/4.7-f/4.8 - although when shooting the Moon you won't fill in the corners of the frames I assume. When properly collimated, the dobs should give you plenty of details

This is true, the K-01 is sharper then K-5.

Lovely images. The 40mm Ltd is a wonderfull lens. When you want the most out off your K-01 then just plunge in and get the Pentax FA 31mm/f1.8 Ltd and you don't need any other lens.

Ron...I must confess: I was a long time Pentax user. My last DSLR was *ist DS, along with MZ-3. I had ALL the FA Limiteds I obtained in Japan back in 1998~2000, plus FA 24/2, F 300/4.5 ED, A 35/2.8, FA 50/1.4, etc..

I SOLD them all in 2007 because at that time Pentax was slowly updating the DSLR and switched to Canon.

Now, here I am wanting those lenses back again but even if I have the budget, they are hard to find...

Before I got the K-01, this is what I had left:

Oops, I got the FA 31/1.8 back in 2005, the 43 was in 1998 and the 77 was in 2000.

And you sold them?

Have you read the book?

Must read!
