Price Hike & Limited Lenses

Hi all,

I was planning to get a limited lens, with the recent price hike I doubt I'd be able to get more than one.

Between the FA Limiteds and DA Limiteds what would you recommend? FA, 31, 43, 77. DA, 21, 40, 70.

I would get the 40mm, 77mm, and 31mm in that order. They're all fantastic primes! But to make a recommendation, we need to know what kinds of applications you need a lens for.

43mm is very compact without lens hood on K01, and very sharp from F1.9
I personally do not think it worth $750, this is ridiculous price for a pancake. Buy it used. Buy "Made in Vietnam" version optically it is every bit as good as "Made in Japan" version.
I compared it side by side with 40 limited and found 43Lim much sharper even on wider apertures.

You can also buy FA 35 F2, it is not Limited, but it is great AF prime.

@Adam, just looking for an everyday lens for now.

@awo425, would the learning curve for the 43mm be greater than that of a 40mm?

I own the 40mm XS which I hear is very similar optically to the DA 40 and I also have the FA 43. I have completely stopped shooting with the XS and entirely switched over to the FA 43, which I think is a fantastic lens and noticeably sharper. I also have the DA 70 and the DA 21 both of which I like very much but those FA Limiteds really are something else. I have a feeling that I will eventually own them all but will probably try and pick them used or on sale during the holidays.

I'd say, wait if you can. Prices will come down eventually.

If you can only get 1 limited lens right now for your K-01, you first need to decide whether you're willing to buy a used lens, because it can save you quite a lot of cash over a brand-new, full-warranty lens.

Also what lens(es) do you currently have? Just a 18-55 kit lens? You could add a limited prime to expand your reach (DA 70 or FA 77) or get much faster, better IQ at your "favorite" focal length. You should check your pictures and see what you shoot most often-- is it closer to between 21-35, or 40-55?

If you can afford it, the FA 31 is pretty much the perfect lens and versatile single prime, everyday walkaround lens. It's just very expensive. A cheaper alternative is the FA 35mm-- these are often sold on the PF Marketplace.

The DA 40 limited makes your K-01 remarkably compact and lightweight, although it's just a touch long as a normal lens. But some people enjoy shooting with that focal length. The FA 43 is outstanding and better than the DA 40, but that's reflected in the higher cost.

I love my DA 70 but it's more of a specialty portrait lens. Does act as a nice short, compact telephoto though.

Personally, I think the DA 21mm is an excellent lens and great match for the K-01. You can pick up a used DA 21mm at a fairly reasonable price from the Marketplace or on eBay (often from Japanese dealers; here is a reputable one:

Good luck!

Neh didn't noticed any. It's a bit short for everyday lens at least if one is using it in a city, 40 mm is short as well. For everyday lens on cropped sensor I would use something like 21mm.

Thanks guys for the input.

Between the 3 which would you think would be the most useful for everyday? FA 77, DA 21, DA 40. Like which one would not cause me to miss out on pictures and what not.

I own the FA77, the DA21 and the FA43. I thought I would use the 21 for everyday shooting, but once I got the 43, I found I preferred that focal length and it's parked on my K5 pretty much at all times. I would think that the 40 would suit your needs well for every day use. plus it's thinner than the 43 and it is also usable on full frame cameras (so I've heard), and there will be a life for it in the future once the Pentax full frame appears, if that is important to you.

(I have one disclaimer - I only just got the 77, so I'm using it more often than the 43 currently, but once I get that out of my system, I'll put the 43 back on there. I don't see the 77 as an everyday lens)

I own the DA 21mm, DA 35mm macro and the FA 43mm.

I've also used the DA 40mm XS.

If I were to have only one lens it'd be the FA 31mm, because of its aperture and field of view (40mm and 43mm are too narrow for a single lens combo).

However I think the K-01 balances better with smaller lenses. In that regard the DA 21mm is my best lens for my K-01. But it has a f/3.2 maximum aperture. Although its field of view is rather useful.

A compact 24mm f/2 lens is the missing perfect kit lens for the K-01. To keep the size down, it could recede into the mirror box.

By the way, I think the K-01 is a camera without a suitable kit lens (prime, wide, small and fast) much like the K10D was, when it should have been accompanied by a Weather Resistant kit lens from day 1.

Cheers,

Hi guys,

I went to my local store and tried the 21mm limited. Was wondering does the hood sometimes come off with the cap? I noticed this when taking the cap off, the hood followed with it sometimes.

Thanks.

@ryan - really nice 31mm. (what case do you use with your k-01 and 31mm?)

I've never had that happen to me, and I do use the 21mm Ltd quite a bit.

Yes, if I could have only /one/ that'd be my pick also.

Fortunately, there's no such rule, though....
