Lens debate for vacation with the K01

You can use either a wide angle or long lens to take landscapes.

With a wide angle, you usually want to look for 3 things, when feasible:
-a foreground [very important]
-a middle ground
-a background.

Typically once you see a scene in the background that catches your eye you want to walk around looking for an interesting foreground before you take the picture. Of course, you wont always get these elements and you dont always need them. But the wider the lens the more likely you need them...FOr instance, if you are shooting a castle, and you walk around and see an interesting boulder or a flowery shrub, you get really CLOSE to this foreground object and focus on it and include the castle as the background. The wider the angle of the lens, the closer you can get. Shoot at small apertures: often you will need f16 or more so that everything is sharp from front to back. To pull off these kind of shots you will need a tripod or something to steady it.

I would take the DA 15 and pancake 40....but those may not be to your liking.

Some great shots on there and may give you an idea if it is for you

From what you have, your best choice would be: 18-55 + 35/2.4 no doubts. Personally, I find a 24mm (35 equivalent in 135mm format) is great for walking arround.
17-50 + 35-70 would not make much sense becouse there is a lot of overlap and the 35-70 would only be useful for the 50-70 range, which will require a lens change...
If you can, go for the 17-50/2.8 and take the 35/2.4 for the moments you want a lighter / smaller package.

I went to Paris some time ago with K-5 Silver and DA 40mm/f2.8 Ltd and Paris does fit into that little gem. So it is not about catching everything, but making enough images that make your holiday.

Except the 35-70 is a full frame lens, so its more like a ~50-100 on the K01....

after thinking about it today, i dont think im going to buy a lens. money would be better spent doing things on the trip than taking pictures. I may still rent the 10-20 just for something to play with and experience though, its only $60 for 10 days.

Hey, wait a minute: either for Full Frame or not, a lens focal length remains the same. The 17-50 would be something like a 26-75mm full frame equivalent lens (field of view). So in full frame equivalent terms you are just adding the 75-100mm range with the 17-50 + F35-70 kit

I think you are right, avoid expenses and use the trip to check if you actually need/enjoy wide lens and how much wide is enough for you in case you take the 10-20. 60USD for 10 days seems as a really nice deal. In this case I would take 10-20 + 35-70 + 35/2.4. (I know you just want 2 lenses but the prime will give a bigger aperture for low light and is really light and small)

Btw., very nice pictures. I've never spent any time in the UK outside of Chelmsford and London (both for work) but that & the highlands are something I've always wanted to do....

Wouldn't know on an absolute scale, though, but from your photos it's up there among the top....

Sad as it may be, despite never having lived there, Japan is the country from which I have the most photos. I have a total of 3 digital photos from my native country, all from the airport.....that's just sad....

Fair enough, just comparing apples to apples with the camera im using.

And I am doing exactly what you said. I've ordered the 10-20, and Ill carry the 35-70 and the 35/2.4 with me. The 35/2.4 served me really well on my last trip, and my 18-55 hasnt been too bad either.

previous travels - Favorites Slideshow by tommy793 | Photobucket - all shot with either the kit lens or the 35 on my K100D Super. Looking forward to a trip with the K01, hope I dont miss the K100D.
