Pentax k01 blocky video artifacts

Has anyone noticed blocky artifacts when panning with the K01 on video mode?
I am sure I'll get a ton of requests to post examples, I will. But first I just want to know if anyone else has the same problem that I am facing because I am getting blocky/pixelated parts on the video images when I am moving my camera.
I updated the k01 to the new firmware (v1.03), and I am using a 16 gig Sandisk Extreme class 10 card.
I also tried using QuickTime player, Windows player, and VLC media player and I still get blocky/pixelated parts; so I truly think it's a problem with the camera.
I need to test and see if I get blocky artifacts when panning with M/A lenses, On/Off NR, and on High/Low ISO speeds.
So far all of my videos using M lenses has resulted in blocky artifacts.

I made this testshot just last week:

You should turn off the SR.

I noticed that 1080p30 was better then 720p60.

I had what I consider to be a defective K-01 that made blocky images like this:

I tried multiple cards and had similar problems. Intermittently. I returned the camera to Crutchfield.

It's perfectly normal (for videos in general) when fast changes occur between frames and the bitrate is small.

Is it a good thing? No.

Aegon: that on the other hand looks suspicious.

So you expect a youtube-hit? Well this was just a testshot for something I wanted (and did) to do the other day.

On any Digital camera, the break down of smooth video in to blocks occurs when there is too much data being lost through the CoDec to resolve the rapid changes in the scene.

This is why I put 'Raise the Data Rate" in my Firmware wish list.

Using Brand-"C" as an example, their wildly overpriced DSLR range records video using the same CoDec, but at 45 Mbits per second, whereas the K-01 (and Brand-"P"s GH range) record at around 20Mbits, though I've noticed enough variation to guess that the K-01 may be using a Variable Bit Rate implementation.

PiDi, I believe you┤re right. I have noticed that when I record at a higher fps AND select the quality level for three stars (the best), videos have less blocky artifacts. I really think that the k01 has a Variable Bit Rate implementation, though I do not think it surpass the 35mbps mark.

@RonHendriks1966 where you just humming "Kiss From a Rose" by Seal? LOL. Thanks, now that song is stuck in my head.

I have a question regarding recording time limit, the K01 has a 25 minute recording limit, right? Does this mean that the video automatically stops recording after 25 minutes, and it allows one to record again for another 25 minutes? Or does the k01 not allow one to record anymore after 25 minutes...
I was recording an interview at 1080p, 30 fps, best quality level, but no audio (separate recorder) with a 16 gb card and the recording time was set up to 16 minutes, I quickly stopped the recording and changed the settings to 720p , 24fps, low quality, and it allowed me to record for another 15 minutes with time to spare.
After stitching both files, I had a video that was 31 minutes long...

You can make more clips after eachother, but the timer is limited to either space on the card, 4GB file or 25 minutes. With FullHD*** you have something like 16 minutes.

hey, hey,. hey,..! Only the girls get to call me PiDi,... and by 'girls' I mean a couple of female film makers,.. only one of them is in Perth and the other Mumbai now...

35Mbits? What are you filming? Highest I've seen so far is about 24 or 25 Mbits, seeing plenty of 17 to 22 too.
(Open files in Quicktime, select 'Window' drop down, then "show Movie Inspector" )

The duration of the maximum recording time is dependent on how much data is being written. This will come back to why I'd like the next Firmware to include exFat.

(Some of this will be familiar to some peeps - Putting a more indepth explanation for those who don't yet know.)

As things stand, the K-01 uses FAT32 on the SD cards, same as nearly every other SD Card based device. FAT32 is limited to a maximum file size of 4Gb.
The frame size (1080p or 720p), frame rate, and the record quality, all combine to determine how quickly you fill up to the 4Gb limit.
This is why when you changed from 1080/30 to 720/24, you saw an increase in the available record time left.

I have my K-01 set to 1080p, 25fps, and best quality, I get a maximum of 19minutes and 33seconds record time, per 4Gb, and so about 37minutes per 8Gb card.
I'm guessing the 25 minutes you mention if the maximum record time available on an 8Gb card, at 1080/30

Now, once you hit that 4Gb file limit, the camera stops recording, and you can hit record again.

I had a 32Gb card in the camera on Saturday, noticed the maximum the camera will display as available record time, is 99 minutes, 59 seconds.

Now, back to that firmware wish,.. exFat does not have a 4Gb file size limit, you could record until the card is full, or nearly so.

To minimize artifacts it can be helpful to play around with the custom images setting. For example, try starting with the bleach bypass and tweak the image to find a balance between style and data rate.

PiDicus, sorry about calling you PiDi. What should I call you, Pi or Rex?
Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. I too wish Pentax comes up with a updated Firmware, but in the meantime the yellow brick is doing a really good job as it is.
Oh, and 35Mbits, lol never mind me.
