While I'd love to have a FA43, I seem to always have something else to spend the $$$ on. But I love the XS anyway- what a great lens.

Manntax, I am probably wrong, but the M doesn't look sharper to me, it looks like it has about a 1/3 to 1/2 stop less exposure, leading to more apparent contrast. Try setting the XS with -1/2 exposure bias and recompare.
Well the light got slightly different while I was change the lenses so perhaps you are right - I will repeat this test in more controlled situation today. But from previous shots if I recall I had the impression of M being slightly sharper than XS. I recently finished a roll of Ektar with it but still needs to get 2 more rolls done before I bulk develp them - then will also know how XS performs on film.

I have created today a quick and dirty test of both lenses - please judge for yourself - here is the link : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/229137-quick-d...-yourself.html

The quick shift feature on the 40Ltd, plus the "nicer build" makes it the better of the two 40mm. I don't have the 40XS, but am given to understand that it has similar optical performance to the 40Ltd (anyone who can confirm that?)

In terms of optical quality, the 43Ltd is hectomiles ahead of the 40Ltd. Only inconvenience is that it doesn't do quick shift.

If money isn't an option, then I'd not hesitate for more than a picoforthnight, and simply get the 43Ltd.

I recall reading a post from a member who talked to a Pentax rep at a presentation. He asked about FA limiteds and regarding FA43, the rep told him that it was better suited for people because of skin color and render while the DA40 was better suited for arquitecture and the like

Just to update as I have got a few PM with offers on lenses - I'm actually moving to NZ over this week so my cash is tied up for a while but thanks, I will probably place a 'Wanted' in the marketplace once I decide to grab one
AF only lenses considered as per 1st post.

I have both the FA43 and DA40 Lim. Everything on the DA40 is small, for example the focus ring is only 3 mm wide. If you focus manually and simultaneously touch the inner barrel in front of it, the focus ring gets so much resistance that you can't turn the ring. So, if you have big hands its only usable with auto-focus, I think.

The total height of the FA43 is 43mm (!), including hood. The height of the DA40 is 22mm, plus hood. So the FA43 is 100% bigger. If I had a K-01 I would still choose the DA40, it's a well-balanced combination. The FA43 seems to be a bit of an overkill.

Between the XS and Limited, since aesthetics matter to me, I chose to order my K-01 body-only and bought the DA40 Ltd. at the same time. It rarely leaves my K-01 (and then only so I can mount the FA35/2, the poor man's FA31 Ltd.).
