Wolf

Taken on my trip to Finland and I decided to take both my K-5 IIs and my K-01 with me. K-01 is by far the most easiest camera to use when it gets really dark.

This is taken at 1/15sec, f/2.8 and ISO9000. It was too dark to see it with my eyes, but was able to find it with the LCD on K-01
And ISO9000 is usable. I have not applied any noise reduction on this when converted to jpg in Lightroom, but the small dimension masks some noise.

Great photo. And thanks for the info on how you got it. I imagine it is not easy to get a photo of a wolf as they can be very wary. What lens did you use?

Ah, nice! I'd really like to see wolves some day

I have had reasonable results at 20,000 ISO (a leopard picture I have posted elsewhere earlier), but that took some more noise reduction. The low-light capabilities of these cameras are still hard to get used to!

A FA*300/2.8. The nice focus limiter on this lens makes it usable on K-01

Poor photographers like myself struggle on with the K300/f4 On a more serious note, I am interested to see that the wolf appears to be a light sandy colour (I guess it might appear more grey in better light?). Our dingo (Canis lupus dingo - a sub-species of the gray wolf) is generally a yellowish colour which is quite similar. However, like the gray wolf, they can vary in colour from almost white to black. Our dingo is also smaller than the European gray wolf. The smaller body gives relatively more surface area to radiate heat in sub-tropical conditions. Attached is an image of a typical dingo (remote camera shot, hence not the best quality). I have only ever seen one dingo on my place "in the flesh". They are very shy - and a real problem as they kill sheep and lambs, as well as calves if they work in packs. My avatar is another dingo (remote camera, infra-red flash).

Here is another picture of it where it is easier to see its color. Taken with K-5 IIs and F*250-600/5.6

And another one in daylight, but this is more grey in color. Also taken with K-5 IIs and F*250-600/5.6

Very nice. This animal obviously hung around for a while for you to get shots with both cameras. Looks like it is quite a big and heavy animal. Much thicker hair than our dingoes even though it is not winter. Any dingo with thick hair and body like that I would assume had a high proportion of domestic dog genetics. (Your second photo has not showed up for me.)

Got the second one now. The "black/grey sprinkled over tan" is what we call "sable" colouring. I think it is a more common colouring with the northern wolves. Towards the tropics the ginger/tan/red colour is more common (The dingo is pretty much like the Arabian wolf sub-species in that respect. At the extreme we get a black animal with tan points (some wolves are also like that.
Love your photos. The dingoes don't stay around for photos where I am - for "health" reasons. Still I cannot help but admire them. They are handsome animals.

That's an impressive shot.
For 600mm and just 1/250s with such a big lens, very good IQ too. Experience at work.

Here are more photos. Most are taken with K-5 IIs, but I also used my K-01. In good daylight it is fast enough, but AF struggle in dim light. But I really like its manual focus capabilities.

Wow, seems I have to visit Finland! Maybe get hold of a DA*300 first, though...

Excellent pictures of the bears, wolverines, and eagles as well as the wolves. Yeah, the "shooting" eagle too

Thanks for sharing!
