Kirk Tuck - the new K-01 evangelist

Ripe Camera: Pentax grabs photographer by the ankle and starts to drag him toward the system....but eccentrically.

"Go buy a camera that makes you smile. Not one that checks shit off a list..."

Vindicated at last.

Methinks Pentax is going to be the hot brand come 2014. Reading new perspectives should be interesting, maybe entertaining.

I know a lot of people pay attention to Kirk, so this burst of positive energy will be felt by many. A bizarre twist in the K-01 story, but the story (like the camera) makes me

The K-01 is a lovable cam with terrific image quality. I don't think they should have discontinued it.

Idea: sell the K-01 as loss leader to get people in the system.

The K-01 was sold as a loss leader...until they ran out.

Well, The K-01 got me into Pentax, and I'm still loving it! Just got my second body yesterday (used, but I didn't pay nearly as much as Kirk Tuck did).

I'll think about the K-3 in maybe 6-8 months, but what I'd like is a K-03 mirrorless - same tech as the K-3 but mirrorless and so (a bit) smaller. Or if they did a K-02 using a 20mp sensor that would be cool too... But really, I can probably keep happily going for a couple of years with the two K-01s I now have.

Seems like this guy writes a new K-01 article every other week doesn't he? Which is kinda funny for a one off discontinued designer camera after the fact.

I really hope Ricoh makes a sequel. It's a gem. He's quite right about mirrorless being too small right now -- it's like cell phones were, racing toward miniaturization. Then along comes the iPhone and they all start getting big again until they're now competing on screen size. Mirrorless' advantage is not size, it's having no mirror. No complex and redundant metering systems.

Funny how the new K-3 has a fancy new RGB 86,000 pixel metering system . . .well those of us with a K-01 already know how much better it meters due to using the whole sensor.

I dunno. The K-01 is a very simple camera. Basically a plastic box with a SR mechanism and some aluminum covers. It's lacking a lot of the expensive SLR parts, not to mention weather sealing. People beat up on the camera for only lasting a year, but how long exactly did they expect Ricoh to make a designer camera? The very nature of the thing says its going to have a limited run. Marc Newson was not going to become a Ricoh brand. I doubt it was a loss leader. They probably made a profit for what it was.

It was a hoya toy anyway, right? Ricoh will look over the tech and decide what is worth an encore & in what form. Hope it turns up again with weather seals!

And he even called the K-01 the best digital camera ever Ripe Camera: I'm so angry at myself. It's all about a lack of foresight.... For me, it'd have to have a flip out touch screen and 10 fps and at least one cheap ultra wide angle option before I grant it the BEST title. In other words, it'd have to be a NEX inside that great Marc Newson shell.
