K-01 w/ F 85mm Soft

Hey guys, I got a new lens, and the K-01 takes an incredibly long time to focus with it. That lens is the Pentax F 85mm Soft f/2.8. It does have a fairly long focus throw. I could also see where the soft properties of the lens could throw off the phase detection autofocus. This lens focuses normally on my K-5. Has anyone else had this issue?

I should clarify - by slow autofocus, I mean it slowly goes through its range. It's not the fast snap-to autofocus of my other lenses. It takes several seconds to autofocus. It will also sometimes fail.

First thing: Make sure you have the latest firmware update on your camera (it contains all previous updates).
Secondly,.. the lens is "soft" and contrast detect AF (which live view cameras have) might have a hard time. But I dont know, I dont have that lens to test things out. Can you test that lens on other cameras? AF faster?

I have the F 85 2.8 soft but I use it on the K-5. It focuses as quickly as my other screwdrive telephoto primes on that camera. So I suspect the problem with the K-01 is related contrast detect AF. Simply stop the lens down to f5.6, where it's contrastier, and see if it focuses faster. Since there's no "A" setting on the lens, this will work.

I have the same problem with my F 135 2.8 on my K-01, very very slow and louder than usual AF. However on my K-5 and K-x the F 135 is very fast to autofocus. All my other F primes and FA 35 work normally on my K-01 as they do on the rest of my bodies.

No, I own the F 135 2.8 version which is the same lens optically as the FA 135 2.8.

Yes, but that same lens on K-5 or K-x in live view should be at least as slow as on the K-01, since it is also in live view. Like I said, latest firmware makes AF generally much better than before the update. The other thing you can try is putting a lens hood on the lens, which can increase its contrast.

The K-01 usually only has problems with focusing slow lenses and certain zoom lenses. There is a thread that lists lenses that dont focus well on the K-01
