If you care about the costs, Sigma 18-125mm seems to be a very good bang for the buck. I saw some for $60-70 on ebay. Another interesting choice is Tamron 24-135mm

although I think this one is more expensive.
I think I'm past the phase of wanting a full-range lens for walkabouts and have settled on two primes that will be used for the bulk of the kind of outdoor scenery that interests me. I now think that clearly identifying what one's natural inclinations are in terms of subject matter is something of more importance than technical details. It would also be foolish not to have something along that could offer a change of pace, so I'm going to look again at lower priced zooms.

Good luck, Krema. If you're going to largely stick to one lens, it should be a good one - I'm jealous!
Don't be jealous yet. I have a lot of pleasures to sacrifice before attaining my goal, but it will be worth it.
