K-01 for sports, anybody?

I'm curious if anyone might be using their K-01 for fast-moving action sports, like soccer.

Or if 'K-01 for sports' is an oxymoron, like "ridiculous, forget that one."

When I first got my K-01, I just gave up trying to use its autofocus to track passing airplanes, and then sort of dismissed it as useless for moving targets. But -- with a Hoodman loupe gaffer-taped on the back, I can see the subject very clearly. So -- if anybody's used it for sports, please let me know how it went-- good or bad!

I'm thinking of finding one cheap and using it for the focus peaking alone. That 400/6.3 is a bugger to focus correctly.

I have shot a couple of indoor soccer matches with the Pentax K100D and K-X. I don't know how different the K-01 AF is compared to those but I found out that AF was not an issue, generally. I used the Sigma 28-70 F/2.8 at around F/5.0 for more DOF.

The main issues I found were the very low light where I had to use the flash and high ISO for better light distribution.

The other thing you need to figure out is where the action will be so you can anticipate the moves.

This is a shot I took with the K-X:

Well I Always take my K-01 with me, next to now K-3 (and sometimes also as in the past K-5). I put one lens on it, depending of my mood (FA31mm mostly, but also DA*55 or FA*85) and use the K-01 for some random shots around the field.

Boulder:

So not directly for the action in heat, but when I can controll the place off action then the K-01 can make excellent images.

Ron Hendriks takes lots of great sports photos with the K-01. I see he already posted.
I would say that it is possible, but you can't rely on AF and burst mode like you could with a classic DSLR. Then again, sport photography existed long before AF was invented, so..

European Championship bouldering 2013 in The Netherlands. The Girl is from Slovenia and became second. Wich was really strange, she was the best that day but failed due to pressure on the last boulder and dropped a spot.

We aren't even made aware of these results over here (well, except for people who really go looking for them). Most people (myself included) only hear the hype surrounding football and the Olympics.

PS nice shot

It's true. Slovenians ARE popping up all over, like Tina Maze in Sochi. Not so bad!

Ron -- do you have a website showing your sports photos?

Na -- you know, it's also true -- we never had autofocus back when, did we? Think I'll try manual focusing for sports for a while. Tell me -- on manual focus, is the K-01 mechanically slower at taking a single exposure than my K-30... or the K-3, for that matter?

I have a website, but I think my last update was in 2011.

The responcetime from the K-01 is just a bit slower then maybe K-3, but not seriously when you are manual focussing. The K-01 is faster working then K-3/K-5 in liveview are.

Tina Amazing is really great!

I just suggest you practice the MF on K-01 a little bit, but once you figure it out it works
