ND filter - what's going on here???

Thought I'd but a cheap ND filter to see what they're all about and how they can help me before I fork out for a decent brand one.
My question is: Should the LCD screen compensate and brighten back up when I put the filter on?? The camera is in 100% manual mode, I'd expect the screen to stay put and just go darker with the ND filter in place.

Yes the LCD will compensate the best it can, no matter what mode. It'll stay bright to help focussing.

Point is, I prefocus - I don't want/need the LCD screen to have a mind of it's own, it get's confusing

It does the same if you play with the aperture ring. Set at 2.8 or set at 22, the LCD is pretty much just as bright. Otherwise the LCD would be useless with lens that aren't auto-aperture

You can always use the digital preview thingy. I'm just not sure why you want to see less?

If you are using a dSLR try using the optical preview lever in the VF instead of LV.

Sure, I can understand that - but that's a mode choice (Using Aperture Ring => Enable) and makes sense there.
In full manual mode I would prefer just that 'full manual' mode. Putting 'sunglasses' on my lens means I need to see/confirm the affect rather than the camera deciding for me that it needs to ramp up the brightness..
The ND type is variable, so it's a little annoying to dial in the ND value and see the screen brighten rather than darken.

K-01 forum

Yep.

I was about to Delete.

I've come to the conclusion for myself that there are things my K-01 wasn't designed to do whether I think it should be able to do them or not. Whenever I grumble to myself about something Pentax left off I try to stop and think whether that something is really something the K-01 (or Q / Q7) really should do.

Doesn't help much though.

PS: In video mode, the LCD reacts exactly as expected (doesn't compensate), so that's something I guess.

I don't know the K-01 but on my K-5 you can press the AE-L button. That will lock the LCD "sensitivity" in that situation. This works for DA and FA lenses in all modes exept Bulb.

With other lenses (K,M,A, Takumars), the LCD "sensitivity" can only be locked when the camera is in a mode other than Bulb or Manual. This locking-feature is a must for me, for example when I do critical focusing on the Moon using small telescopes or long (manual) telephoto lenses.

Don't forget to cover your viewfinder when using NDs to prevent light leaks.
