K-01 and AstroPhotography

I've started trying to get some star scenes with my K-01 and a wide angle manual zoom lens. I've tried several time exposures, but rapidly ran into overexposure exceeding about 15 seconds.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this better?

Astrotracker is the easy way to go.

What lens? For me using the 50 f/1.7 I put it at f/2.2, ISO 800, and do multiple exposures of 2 seconds each, then stack them. Astrotracer will not work with the K-01 unfortunately.

Really? The in-depth review here on it says it will. Which is correct?

I have an astrotracer and K-01 with the latest firmware and it definitely will not do astrotracer mode. I longingly wish it would.

Try and have a look a this thread by nightfly:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/groups/135-astrophotography/2201-k-01-astrophotography.html

You don't give many details, but your problem might be that you are shooting under a light polluted night sky? In that event there is no way around post-processing.

Just a simple and by no means 'glorious' example: An exposure (or preferrably a series of stacked exposures) at ISO3200 and 20 sec. under a severely light polluted city sky may be processed from this:

single exposure: 200mm, f/2.8, 20 sec., ISO 3200

to this:

10 exposures stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and post processed in PhotoImpact X3

Thanks. Someone should get Adam to change the article on the O-GPS1 so it doesn't mislead anyone.

You have no idea how much I wish it worked for it because mine will do full spectrum and IR stuff.

Yeah, I know, it would be so nice. Any interesting results with your modded one?

I can tell you it is amazing for landscapes, especially when doing IR ones. I've gotten beautiful results.

Here are a couple with a 720nm filter on the front of the DA 18-135WR with it:

Lovely. Thanks for sharing. Seems like the K-01 is ideal for this. I'm tempted. I don't wanna hijack the thread, so if you want to chat more on it we could always start another thread.

I looked for some of my star fields, but couldn't find them. Those are definitely interesting in full spectrum. IR is also interesting.

Sure, not a problem. I would definitely recommend one that has either been full spectrum or IR converted. The images, while they take some post processing, can be beautiful and otherworldly.
