In praise of the K-01 for events

The K-01 is a sweet tool. All it lacked was and EVF and PDAF. I loved it even with its limits.

I use my K-01 mainly for tripod work; still life, photo copying and model shooting when not rushed.

It is a great, reliable camera once you get used to the controls.

I love the 100 point focusing grid.

It's great for portraits if you're not rushed.

I love my K-01s. I shoot with my K-1 also, but the K-01 sensor is awesome and the K-01 is more fun to shoot with. Pentax should update the K-01 with the KP sensor and software, improve the rear screen for sunlight, and add manual SR for video....it would sell like crazy. They already paid for much of the tooling and mirrorless makes a lot of sense. Others must agree as the used prices are higher than what I paid for the K-01 brand new! Wake up pentax!

I have a K70 and a K3ii but I was looking for something I could keep with me discretely most of the time so I bought a K-01 with the 40mm XS lens. I found 40mm a bit too long for my minds eye but the K-01 with a 21mm Ltd to be perfect, but hardly pocketable. I have a couple other niggles with it, too. So I started acquiring Q7s and the lenses thinking the K-01 should go on my for sale list.

But while I was waiting for the Q series stuff to arrive, I documented a charity event for the homeless where I thought a DSLR would be too “official”. I took the K-01 with the plastic fantastic DA 35mm f2.4 and got some really good results. I spent the past weekend using only the Q7s and all the lenses and after reviewing those images decided I NEED TO KEEP the K-01 for “serious” casual or “casual” serious shooting. It definitely has a place in my TO&E if not in my pocket.

I really like the K01 with the 35mm 2.4 also. On my last trip I had that with me most of the time! I also used the K50 with the 18-135mm. At times I carried both. It really worked out well.
