I know about all that more in theory than in practical terms.
Which means that I have no idea of the cost of such filters, and how much light they would "eat".
The availability of cheap filter and the possibility to shoot handheld in daylight would make the idea of the conversion very tempting.
If filters are expensive and shooting on a tripod a necessity, I would see everything under a different light...

I remember reading an article from a person who does astrophotography that they're able to use their full spectrum camera for conventional photography without much issue.
