Resurrected K-01 as a "Back-Up" Travel-Camera

Hi there,
First real go at starting a new "Thread" . . . . . . . .

I have a "resurrected" K-01 (shutter-count 400's)
Plan-A is to use this camera, with a single lens, Sigma 18-250 HSM, as a back-up travelling camera (carrying only a spare battery, the whole "kit" weighs in at 1,100g, and gives me 700+ snaps)
K-01 has been criticised for battery life.
Maybe those users NEVER changed Film every 24 or 36 photos
The Sigma 18-250 HSM lens has been "held-over" from my days using a K-x as my travelling camera.

Be careful with that Sigma lens.
The example I have has only three screws holding the metal mount to the plastic body … and the plastic isn't very strong
My example is now only reliable in manual focus mode, which can be fiddly at the longer settings without an eye-level viewfinder.
The image quality, however, is very good
Enjoy!

Sigma lens mount

Thanks, Kypfer,
this lens has Metal Mount,
I had it back in my "Pre-Owned B&H K-x" DSLR days, lens has not been heavily used.
If it fails, i have a newer Sigma "Contemporary" 18-200 waiting to take over.
Some early Sigma HSM lenses proved unreliable with AF performance, but these 2 are good ones, hence, keepers.
Rob
.
P.S.

This Sigma Lens is a "2nd-gen" HSM, KAF3 in "Pentax" talk.
https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-18-250mm-f3-5-6-3-dc-macro-hsm.html
Much more reliable than the earlier HSM Sigma lenses (KAF2).
And, it has a Metal Mount.
Also has a basic "Macro" capability . . . . . a good walk-about lens.

Part of me wishes I still had my K-01. I bought it in 2012 and had a great time with it in Argentina.
Enjoy!

Thanks, Sandy.
Actually, my first experience with K-01 was a disaster.
My first ever experience with a digital camera, (too many years attached to 35mm film ME, MZ30 & ZX7)
Instruction manual was in Japanese.
The camera was a "Lemon" => Lenses got stuck on, and could not be dis-mounted, Battery compartment got HOT, and mode dial cover fell off . . . . . . i sold it, and bought a pre-owned K-x from B&H, with warranty.
Recent events have caused me to look for a "new" travelling "back-up" camera, ans also a camera i can "Play" with in the IR / Full-Spectrum world.
So, i decided to give the K-01's a go, 2xCamera bodies, different colours, the 2nd one headed in for IR (or Full Spectrum) conversion.
This time, ENGLISH User-Manual downloaded

These 2 pics were taken with FA 28-105 lens.

I am glad to see the K-01 getting a chance to go on holidays, the blue colour is pretty cool too, enjoy.

K-01's travelling companion

Here is the K-01's travelling companion.
Picked up the Kp before Covid,
the DA 55-300 PLM from a Forum Member,
and the DA 18-135 extracted from a New K-70 kit (selling the K-70 body, having acquired a New KF)
P.S. tested out the Flash on the K-01 for this pic - - - didn't do a very good job

That's one thing I feel one cannot do in all seriousness...
I bought mine used in September 2014 (don't know when it was produced), and three years later it could still belt out 450+ pictures on a single charge.
It's now almost 9 years old, which is an eternity for a lithium-ion battery (always the one that came with the camera), I still use it a lot, and often forget to charge it between outings... and the battery never failed me.

i have also found the Li-90 to be a superior, reliable battery +> 1 of my reasons for going with K-01 as Traveller-Camera.
if you use the Forums "shutter-count" on your camera, it will also give you Date of Manufacture
.
Check Camera Shutter Count and Manufacture Date
.
good luck

Cool blue color!! I took mine all around italy in 2013 and 2014 and got lotsa great pics. Sadly my original succumbed to the stuck shutter problem but I bought another one cause I just love the camera.

FYI Walmart has the da40xs for sale at $149 brand new. Picked one up and it is really brand new in never opened box. Makes for a great portable camera and takes great pics!

Dream combination, have you tried the 28-105 on your KP? You are in for a surprise. I own the 28-105 as well and it is amazing!

i have tried both the D-FA 28-105, and the DA 18-135, on my Kp.
As a travelling kit, on the Kp, i have gone for the 18-135 => it is slightly smaller, marginally lighter, and wider zoom range.
I do still use the FF 28-105 around "home" on the Kp, otherwise my KF "owns" the D-FA 28-105 as its "walk-about" lens.
Rob
.
P.S.
i recently acquired a brand new (open-box) DA 40XS Lens from DigiDirect, for AU$249, with 12 months Aussie Warranty.
